In CH, #forests account for 20-30% of total #snow storage in #winter. On south-facing slopes, snow usually lingers longer in alpine forests than in the neighbouring open terrain. On north-facing slopes, the opposite is true, as SLF researchers found.

After the #avalanche #winter of 1951, #SLF researchers developed a system for mapping areas at #risk from avalanches. The resulting colour scale for danger zones still forms the basis of the hazard maps produced today.
