And sometimes that is so fundamentally at odds with how you've seen yourself up to that point that it becomes necessary to remake the entire liberal consensus so that you're still positioned on the correct side of it, despite being a bigot.

If you're Christian, you'll hate trans people for supposed Christian reasons. If you're a feminist, you'll do it for supposed feminist reasons. None of it matters, really. You've already had the instinctive jolt of revulsion; you just need to make it palatable to yourself.

Bottom line is that they personally find trans people (and trans women in particular) icky for their own neurotic reasons, and they'll justify that post hoc with whatever convoluted reasoning they can fit into their current worldview.

Years ago, they might have actually gone out of their way to say that they have nothing against Dr Upton herself, but they have to defend "women's rights" by making an issue of which changing room she uses. Now it's just straight in with the predator stuff.

It's also an example of what a lie the "just asking questions", "fairness in sports", "I'll march with you if..." stuff always was. Because it's hard to think of a clearer cut example of a terf issue based on an alleged *principle* - single sex spaces - that has now become a *personal* vendetta.

It lays bare their whole credo and, in a just world, people would instantly see it for the moral panic it is and ignore everything terfs say. But the coverage has been so appaling that I'm certain plenty of people have already internalised the sexual predator narrative.

You can - you shouldn't, but you *can* - debate whether it is, in a broader sense, appropriate for Upton to use that changing room, but it's absurd to level the accusation of being a predator against her individually.

The very worst thing Upton could ever have been guilty of was following flawed (by terf logic) work regulations. She used the facilities she was meant to use at the time. There's no indication anyone was harmed or that anyone besides the one nurse who hounded her gave a shit.

I know, I know: they see all trans women as predatory males, that's part of the whole toxic belief system that drives their weird little brains into continuous paroxysms of bigotry, but this is instructive because it shows you the process of manufactured consent as it happens.

And even had the tribunal *not* cleared Upton of any wrongdoing, that wouldn't have made her a "predator".

Like, okay, we know what this is actually about, but is the story that the presence of a trans woman is a violation of cis women's privacy and dignity, or is it that men are 'pretending to be women' to make it easier to carry about assaults? Because those are very different things.

And that has now memetically mutated in the minds of her harassers to Upton being a sexual predator, who can only have been in a female changing room for nefarious purposes.

This is sort of the whole business in a nutshell too, because the basis of the tribunal wasn't that Upton had assaulted anyone or acted in any way inappropriately, but that a trans woman simply using women's facilities was a violation of the provision of "single sex spaces".

Yeah, I think I got a perfect score despite having no musical ability whatsoever. I literally just figured out the words as if it was a code (which tbf it is). They could have been colours, symbols, whatever. I got the second highest overall grade in the class, completely by accident.
