That sexual selection is one of the primary drivers in evolution is well established. Studies of Mesozoic #dinosaurs and #pterosaurs, however, have been dominated by the view that the variation, extravagance and diversity seen in these animals is not due to the pressures of sexual selection, but...
A splotchy-patterned Troodon and its chick flee from the sudden appearance of a huge, snake-necked elasmosaur. Its emergence sends a spray of water flying between them, nearly sweeping the young dinosaur away.
Check out this unbelievably cool Jan Sovák painting! How often do you see plesiosaurs and dinosaurs interacting at all, let alone this cinematically? It’s unbelievable how productive Sovák was as an artist, I just keep finding more and more of his work that I’ve never seen before!

And Horner had a rep as a creep well before this. Marrying a 19 year-old-student when he was 65, then treating it as some kind of joke or unserious. Women MSU students who told me they were interested in paleo, until their interactions with him. Not to mention how got his fame by claim jumping.

New Vintage Dinosaur Art! And I'm happy to say that it's more Maurice Wilson from the 1950s, courtesy of reader Alexander Guridov. Wilson's art is remarkably well-observed and beautifully painted for the time, and I might get a bit gushing.
Palaeoart, on paper, should not have the same systemic barriers of academia, ergo, be quite diverse. There's no staff hierarchy, lower financial barriers, most is online ergo relatively decentralised. And yet, looking at available stats, palaeoart is as bad as paleontological academia. Why?
Thank you, @dinoconuk.bsky.social . Abuse has no place in the palaeo community. We stand in solidarity with this message, and wtih all the victims of the horrible crimes commited by the Epstein organization.
Finally, I can break silence! I did a lot of creature design work for this show (collaborating, of course, with the production team) and think the animals are looking pretty good here! This was a lot of fun to work on - will be watching on Mar. 6!

That's our podcast episode for March sorted, then!
A bittersweet article today as Gemma remembers a hidden gem in Emmen, a dinosaur museum that is no longer there.
Cover of the book “The Last Great Dinosaurs” written by Monty Reid and illustrated by Jan Sovák, featuring a leaping dromaeosaurid pursuing two birds.
It actually arrived! “The Last Great Dinosaurs” was one of my few remaining dinosaur book holy grails and I’m thrilled to finally add it to my collection after so many false starts. I can’t wait to get some good photos and share it with everyone over on the @chasmosaurs.bsky.social blog!
Bernard Robinson is an artist whose work I’ve always been happy to stumble upon. He was extremely skilled and both the quality of his work and its obviously retro nature make it hugely nostalgic for many.
For #FossilFriday I’m pleased to announce our new paper on investigating the cranial performance and evolution of feeding behavior in tyrannosauroids and other theropods. Here’s a thread on some of our major findings. #Dinosaurs #Paleontology #Tyrannosaurus #Theropods
Paleoart has always been rife with cheap, inaccurate depictions and copied illustrations. Especially among children’s books, many authors aren’t experts and don’t know what to look for. ai slop is making it worse, whatever looks dinosaur-ish treated as accurate because it appeared on an image search
