Some nacreous material remains, but much of it has been worn away from this specimen - which is why we decided to risk sawing it.

The advantage of having exterior detail absent is that you can clearly see the complex suture marks imprinted on the interior.

It's #fossilfriday, and since my wife Anne is crazy about ammonites, I have many to choose from for photography purposes. Here is a heavily-weathered Acanthoceras (Upper Cretaceous) collected from a streambed in Grand Prairie, TX. 10 cm. dia.

Giant Aussie dinosaur was well equipped to nibble on tasty bush tucker In a surprising new study, Australia’s most famous plant-eating dinosaur has been described as a “picky eater with a nose for good food” when it roamed across the continent around 96 million years ago. After examining different parts of the skull from new bones of the large-bodied ornithopod Muttaburrasaurus langdoni, fossil experts from across Australia and the US have released several new insights in a journal article published in PeerJ.

Microscope photo of fossil organic matter from an ancient organism. The organic matter is various shades of brown ranging from concentrated marmite/vegemite, though to highly diluted marmite/vegemite. Some areas have a text like smooth sheets with many tiny holes, some areas have a fluffy texture. A red and blue scale bar shows the image is about 325 microns, or 0.325 millimeters across.

Fossil Friday #313: Mazonomya mazonensis George Witaszek sent us this breathtaking plate platter of Mazonomya mazonensis (see Mazon Monday #25). This animal was called "clam-clam" by collectors. Mazonomya mazonensis was known incorrectly as Edmondia for a long time. It was redescribed by Jack Bailey in the book "Paleobiology, Paleoecology, and Systematics of Solemyidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Protobranchia) from the Mazon Creek Lagerstätte, Pennsylvanian of Illinois" in 2011.

Palaeontologists discover new long-necked dinosaur in Patagonia A German-Argentine team of paleontologists led by SNSB dinosaur expert Oliver Rauhut has discovered a new long-necked dinosaur, Bicharracosaurus dionidei, from the Upper Jurassic period in Argentina, dating back approximately 155 million years. Long-necked dinosaur fossils from the Jurassic period in the Southern Hemisphere are rare, so the new fossil contributes to a better understanding of the evolution of these giant herbivores on the southern continents. The researchers have now published their findings in the journal PeerJ.
