Awesome new paper by Thomas Clements and co-authors!

Fun fact: despite the name similarity, I have nothing to do with Pohlsepia or Palaeocadmus pohli 😉

This arachnid is a phalangiotarbid, an enigmatic order of paleozoic arachnids. Although being one of the best-known species of this group, its anatomy is still mysterious on some points.

Size : 1,2cm of body length
Time period : Late Carboniferous
Paleoart speculativometer : Few missing details

The animal drawn is a phalangiotarbid, an arachnid looking a bit like a super heavy spider and with an abdomen made of 6 little segments followed by a broad plate taking up to 2/3 of the abdomen's length

- The giant millipede Arthropleura walking through the forest floor, next to an amphibian (maker of the Puertollanopus tracks) and insects
- General view of the swamp landscape, with a volcano erupting in the background
- A early synapsid, maker of possible Dimetropus tracks
- Pecopteris monyi, leaves of a tree fern
- A pair of Acanthodes swimming through vegetation and smaller fish
- The temnospondyl Iberospondylus schultzei swimming next to some platysomid fish
- Small clam shrimp Euestheria
- Two lycophytes Omphalophloios puertollanense next to some swamp creatures
- The xenacanth Orthacanthus hunting in the murky waters
- Juvenile shark Lissodus hiding from the fish Progyrolepis speciosus
- Puertollanichthys richtei, a small fish, swimming through the vegetation

Mazon Monday #309: Herbivory is Older Than We Thought! This is Mazon Monday post #309.  What’s your favorite Mazon Creek fossil?  Tell us at  email:esconi.info@gmail.com. The Mann Lab at the Field Museum has been very busy. Their new paper "Carboniferous recumbirostran elucidates the origins of terrestrial herbivory" published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution has significant implications for the Mazon Creek ecosystem. This paper shows how even "old" ecosystems like the Sydney Mines and Mazon Creek are constantly being reinterpreted through new discoveries.
