Researchers across #Macaronesia shared their amazing work, from coastal taxonomy to deep-sea habitat mapping, and hopes for future collaborations. We look forward to more joint research across the region!
Thank you to all our participants!

Last month, the #TWILIGHTED team at Geomar organized the 1st Macaronesia Marine Biology and Technology Symposium on the Ocean Science Centre Mindelo, in Cabo Verde.
Join us online to hear of incredible initiatives within the deep-sea research community!
The Deep Ocean Observing Strategy's (#DOOS) annual online meeting takes place 5-7 May. Don't miss our #TWILIGHTED updates on May 5!

How do we inspire young people with ocean science? By creating new activities, testing them, talking about them and trying again... Our TWILIGHTED Ocean Literacy Workshop in Cabo Verde with IMar gave us the chance to learn from others and trial new ideas! Funded by the EU. Video by Patrícia Nunes.
TWILIGHTED is at #OSM26! Come find us before we leave!
Let's chat about our low-cost deep-sea research tools (lnkd.in/dbPyh-ch) or about your own low-cost deep-sea research tools you'd like to deploy with us in Madeira Island!

These squid are believed to be the prey of deep-diving cetaceans like sperm whales, as their stomachs have been found to contain the beaks of large squid. We love this video caught by NOAA, captured at more than 700 meters, of a squid thought to be ~3-4 meters.
To celebrate #Halloween, our MARE-Madeira #YouthAmbassadors have pulled together some of the ‘spookiest’ critters of the #deepsea to share with you! Today we’re celebrating the Giant Squid of the genus Architeuthis, which can reach at least 13 meters in length!

Worms of the genus Osedax (Latin for ‘Bone devourer’) are commonly found on whale falls in the deep sea -- munching on their bones! Fun fact: these critters don't have mouths or stomachs. They rely on acid from symbiotic bacteria in their ‘roots’ to digest organic material.
#Halloween is getting closer! Our MARE-Madeira #YouthAmbassadors would like to share another #SpookyScience critter with you: Zombie Worms!

This September, our partners at NTNU hosted a deep-sea technology training school for scientists, technicians and students from @maremadeira.bsky.social and GEOMAR. It got rave reviews from attendees and hit all project KPIs for moose and aurora borealis sightings, too 🦌

Ghost sharks, or chimaeras, live in the deep ocean and are known for their ghostly appearance, including translucent skin, flowing fins and eerie dark eyes. Chimaeras are a cartilaginous fish, like sharks and rays, but they diverged from a shared ancestor 400 million years ago.

Ciência Viva no Verão returns(!) and we hosted a smorgasbord of deep-sea activities and games for visiting families. We also had a live-stream of an ROV dive off the coast of Madeira, giving participants the chance to see a wreck and some underwater life in real time!
GEOMAR hosted our first TWILIGHTED training school this month, covering deep-sea research tools and techniques, plus communications and project management. Want to know what we learned? Find out on our TWILIGHTED blog! 👉 twilighted.eu/mare-madeira... Funded by the EU
