‘Jaws’ made people fear sharks. 50 years later, can it help save them? Scientists are using the lure of Steven Spielberg's blockbuster to aid shark conservation efforts.

After 450 million years of evolutionary history, shark populations are collapsing, and more than a third of shark species and their relatives face extinction.

Can't help but feel we're living through an increasingly existential war between spectacle and substance with spectacle winning battle after battle after battle.

The way you actually change public opinion is by getting enough people and sources to repeat an idea that it starts to "seem" correct, even like the consensus, to many listeners, at which point they'll often adopt it.

A tapestry of succulents in a rock garden. A yellow and green kalanchoe felt plant with wide fuzzy leaves sits to the right of a kalanchoe tiger stripes plant with green and reddish purple leaves. At the base are two sedum "spring glow" (right) and an unidentified gray green succulent with thick pointy leaves.

A small group of succulents happily sharing root space in a tapestry design. The Felt plant (kalanchoe baharensis) provides beneficial shade for the smaller plants at its base.

Why Fungi Could Get Higher Conservation Status And Why It Matters The UK and Chile are proposing at the UN’s biodiversity conference COP16 in Colombia that fungi receive the same status to animals and plants. This could help foster and funding research.

Our first Bluesky post contains some good news for #fungi! After a long history of being unprotected, COP16 marked a huge advancement in the conservation of fungi. 🍄🥳

Thanks to work led by our partners at Fungi Foundation, The Fungal Conservation Pledge was introduced at #COP16. bit.ly/3Vl9GHL

Happy adoption day. 😺

Hard to believe it’s been ten years since I became Bella’s servant.

The person at the shelter said Bella was uppity, and I might want to adopt a “friendlier” cat.

Glad I didn’t listen.
