When someone discloses feelings of burnout, a supportive response can facilitate trust, hope, and effective recovery. A poor response can do the opposite.
I hear many stories about poor responses to burnout disclosure. Here's what NOT to do.

DRAB is a good mnemonic, it pinpoints negative actions which enable workplaces to maintain business as usual. Acts of denial, assumption and burial work especially well together, as managers try to focus on the positives, or what can be retrieved from the fallout, even with the best of intentions.
Thank you!
Yes, while I have heard some genuine horror stories, it’s also easy to see how some of these responses can emerge from good intentions. That’s why people need to understand burnout instead of simply hoping that generally well-intentioned people will do the right things.

Returning to work can be hard after any illness or injury. Evidence suggests that returning after burnout can be especially hard. This issue looks at why, and discusses ways to improve the return-to-work experience for workers who have been recovering from #burnout.

This doesn’t surprise me. It’s partly that embracing AI to boost productivity leads to increased output expectations. It’s that AI fundamentally changes the nature of work to be less fulfilling.

I didn’t really try studying until the last year of high school. I didn’t buy textbooks for college, because they were expensive and I did fine by taking notes in lectures. Then I started a PhD and discovered I didn’t know how to structure my own learning.
Striking paper from researchers at Anthropic using a randomised control trial to look at the effects of AI use on skills acquisition.
TL:DR ‘We found that using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery.’

It’s fine if people decline a “deep-thinking” badge. It’s less fine that people are comfortable with a tool built on theft that harms the environment, drives layoffs and reduces paid work for real artists, constantly misinforms, and facilitates child pornography.

"Criticisms of AI must include guidance for responsible engagement with it, not just exhortations to avoid it" good lord, I am so tired of these pieces that are the "sensible AI guy" stance that mostly comes down to "AI is here to stay and I am ready to lick the boot, begrudgingly"

It isn't a new year's resolution (or even a change in my practice), but it's a commitment I'd like to see more people make in 2026.

On the left, a copy of Runescape: Shadows of Amascut, a novel by Erin M. Evans with a rotting jackal-monster sparking magic hunting two figures in the foreground. The background is the same as the larger image's: an eerie twilight desert with yellow sand dunes. The text reads "There are strange happenings in the desert" titanbooks.com.
Happy #Runescape: Shadows of Amascut Day (US Observed)! Please enjoy this tale of cultures in the throes of upheaval, many shades of grief, a very spooky desert that's a bit Fantasy Ancient Egypt and a bit haunted house, and dog things *you should not pet!*
