What Will It Take to Get A.I. Out of Schools? “I find myself speaking with my kids about A.I. in the same terms that we might discuss a creepy neighbor who lives down the block,” Jessica Winter writes. Read her report on the push for A.I. in educ...

An outstanding, comprehensive rebuke of AI mania in K-12 by @winterjessica.bsky.social that rounds out by highlighting the growing coalition of parents, educators, and other concerned humans that is working fast and hard to tamp it down.

On a bright blue background, teal text reads “Environmental Justice, Disability Justice, and Climate Justice are one fight.” Underneath, the subheading reads “Climate change and environmental racism are disabling — from extreme heat to super storms, and from fossil fuel extraction to processing.” Below is the teal Disability Culture Lab logo. At the top is a blue circle with two semicircles on either side, with a green geometric shape in the center. The same shape is repeated at the bottom of the slide.

George Washington’s Woke Vaccines What the Founders would have thought about Pete Hegseth lifting the requirement that service members get the flu vaccine.

Hegseth's repeal of universal flu vaccines is nonsense on so many levels, but his claim vaccine mandates were an "era of betrayal" irked me as a historian. Here's my response, in @thebulwark.com this morning;

Case No. 6:25-cv-02409-MTK
OPINION AND ORDER
STATE OF OREGON, et al.,
Plaintiffs,
V.
ROBERT F. KENNEDY, JR., in his official capacity as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, et al.,
Defendants.
KASUBHAI, United States District Judge:
Unserious leaders are unsafe. There is nothing more serious than our leaders' dedication to the rule of law so that we might maintain the integrity of our constitutional democracy. This case highlights a leader's unserious regard for the rule of law. This case demonstrates how disregard for the rule of law does not merely result in an abstract infraction. Rather, and tragically, this case is one of a long list of examples of how a leader's wanton disregard for the rule of law causes very real harm to very real people.
This Court can and does judge the lawfulness of the process (or lack thereof) by which any policy choice might be made. Here, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., unlawfully issued a declaration threatening to cut federal funding to medical providers who provided gender-affirming care to minors. If such a declaration could have been

6. The opinion was scathing, and called out the Trump administration for flagrant abuse of authority and disdain toward the rule of law. “Unserious leaders are unsafe,” Judge Kasubhai wrote in the opinion’s opening line. “There is nothing more serious than our leaders’ dedication to the rule of law"

Federal Judge Vacates Kennedy Declaration, Permanently Blocks Trump's Trans Youth Care Hospital Threats The judgment overturns the Kennedy Declaration which has been used to force 40 hospitals to drop trans youth care.

1. This weekend, a federal judge permanently blocked funding threats to providers and hospitals that provide trans youth care.

The judge also blocked "any similar policy."

Hospitals have NO excuse and must return to providing care under many blue state laws.

It will be extremely interesting to see what institutions like Fenway Health and NYU Langone do now. The ostensible reason for their ending of youth gender care is now gone - will they resume care for all the trans kids they abandoned?

‘It’s a Nightmare’: The Human Toll of the Catholic Church’s Trans Healthcare Ban Missing hormones. Canceled surgeries. Bureaucratic denials. Late last year the Catholic Church banned all trans healthcare across its sprawling networks. The impact on trans people's lives is devastat...

Crossing state borders for HRT. Insurance denials. Missed surgeries.

U.S. Catholic bishops imposed a ban on all trans healthcare throughout the church's massive networks. That's left working class trans people struggling even more.

Lawmaker Says the “Kids Online Safety Act” Aims to Protect Kids from “The Transgender” KOSA has bipartisan support but LGBTQ+ advocates say it would be harmful.

And in case there was any room for doubt, the Republican coauthor of KOSA explicitly said she expects and hopes the bill to make it harder for queer people to connect with each other and find out they're not alone (as Katelyn says she did here)

Kansas Sends Letters To Trans People Demanding The Immediate Surrender Of Drivers Licenses "The legislature did not include a grace period."

It seems all Kansas-issued trans drivers' licenses are invalid, effective tomorrow

It is now illegal for trans people to drive a car until they surrender their license at a DMV (that most will need to drive to) and have it reissued with the wrong gender marker

This was never about woman's sports

As of tonight, licenses of trans people across Kansas are being invalidated en masse, enabling the overnight criminalization of an entire group of people for going about our lives. It’s often said you never know when you’re living through history, so let me assure you: that’s what’s happening now.

Many are appropriately outraged by Altman’s comments here implying that raising a human child is akin to “training” an AI model.

This is part of a broader pattern where AI industry leaders use language that collapses the boundary between human and machine.

Tracing Queer History Through NYC’s Public Parks The green spaces that served as a refuge for historically oppressed LGBTQ+ groups are at the center of contemporary campaigns to memorialize the movement.

Whether as sites of protest, celebration, communal mourning, or remembrance, public parks have always played a vital role in the history of New York City’s LGBTQ+ rights movement. Landmarks like Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain pulse with their own queer history.

A lot of people, including me, were wondering how an IRB could ever approve this study.

The answer is that no IRB did. The person who “signed off” on approval from the only ethics board that reviewed it had resigned three years earlier. His signature was used without his knowledge.
