Linocut portrait of Isabella Aiona Abbott in indigo on cream coloured paper. Sheโs facing forward at a table in a shirt and sweater vest with a sheet with algae samples on the table. In my print, she is surrounded by algae of the Pacific, all of which appeared in Abbott's research publications, including several species she discovered, or based on images of specimen she personally collected or whose traditional use as food she documented. The algae are in pinks, khaki green and rust.
Happy birthday to #botanist Isabella Aiona Abbott (1919-2010), ๐งช๐ก๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ฌ #histsci renown algae expert, celebrated seaweed cook, devoted teacher & mentor, expert on Hawaiian ethnobotany, 1st Indigenous Hawaiian woman to earn a PhD in science & 1st woman or person of colour to become a full professor on ๐งต
Made in Manchester and Leigh: Kathleen Drew-Baker (1901-57), a star botanist at the University of Manchester, made breakthroughs in cultivation of seaweed that saved Japanโs multi-billion pound sushi industry, for which she is commemorated there as โMother of the Seaโ. 1/6

Day 4 ending on #phycologyfriday with more sample ID, and lectures on green algae cladophorales, coralline algae and maerl!
Day 3 included great talks on brown algae and red algae by Dr Juliet Brodie, and a trip to the marina to collect a variety of other samples! And ending with a lovely group BBQ!
Day 2 involved sorting through our field samples, a trip out into the sound to look at Kelp forests with an ROV, and lectures on non-natives! (And a little nosey at some mangroves!)
