there are people who’s 2020 trauma was getting coughed on and screamed at while working at wendy‘s. I wonder why they mostly aren’t on this website.

If someone is motivated but hasn't had exposure to material they would need, opportunities need to be created for them to show they are capable. You can’t assess lack of potential from lack of evidence, and it’s unfair to prevent people in that situation from being able to create evidence at all.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

This lofty language has two key caveats: (1) they feel an obligation solely in terms of "defense," not more broadly, such as common welfare, public health, or even democracy; (2) they admit a "debt" yet offer no repayment, instead demanding the exact opposite, that the country pay them even more.

they’ve tried to give the appearance of being good on under-researched illnesses like long covid but they‘re actually doing nothing for us and clearly view us as a resource to be exploited by wellness grifters. I worry that it’s making us look like a right wing interest group and increasing bias.

Really gotta emphasize this: the targets & requirements in the Clean Power Plan were *so* modest, *so* conservative, *so* unambitious that *the power sector met them anyway, in the course of normal market operation*. The regs would have had basically no effect at all relative to the status quo.

really hate that I can read anodyne statements on this website about “unskilled” people deserving good lives and just know that the poster is using a definition of “skilled” that primarily pertains to genAI

imo some of the discourse about people (usually women) turning to chatbots for “help” with their chronic illness and/or to diagnose something their doctors are ignoring is being manufactured because it’s becoming clear that genAI in actual medical research is not delivering anything of value.

the constitution, as the actual document as it actually exists, is unfit for our republic. for precisely that reason, we have already seen large facets of said republic dismantled in little over a year. we must go to war with the constitution so that a new republic may yet be born.

I was sent a lovely little paper last June about visualizing elliptic curves over finite fields and you just know I had to draw about it. Anyway now it’s space and piracy is involved!

like feel free to own me with this post when chatbots cure cancer, I’d love for cancer to be cured. but as someone who worked in medical research, sadly for much less time than i would have liked, I’ve been saying it doesn’t work that way and so far it appears to actually not work that way.

there’s probably writing a person could read that’s supposed to resolve this and would make them go “oh of course, it all makes sense now” and then a year later they’d be like “you know what, I think that was fake, it still doesn’t make sense”

sorry for this take but I feel like the idea of disability justice is inherently flawed on account of one of the core justice things that needs to happen re: disability is preventing it or turning (certain) disabled people into abled people. irreconcilable.

In Pursuit of Understanding the Crash What Post-Exertional Physiology Tells Us About ME/CFS

Excellent overview of post exertional malaise by Todd Davenport. Strong recommendation from me to read and discuss. We can’t get ME/CFS right until we get PEM right.

Initially archaeologists thought that Indigenous Americans got to the Americas fairly late ("Clovis first"), and any evidence of earlier stone tools is just a mistake, then incontrevertible evidence is found, and hte date is pushed back further and further

Feats of Strength on occasion. I get sad thinking about the ways people normalize things to themselves, like that one tumblr post about how it’s totally normal to feel exhausted after riding in the car. there are people who have never known health and I’m not one of them. at this same time, what

I’m in kind of a weird place with the idea of having “always been sick” or whatever. like idk some of my long covid symptoms are actually magnified physical quirks I had previously and didn’t think about, but I wasn’t disabled in any way and I did not feel sick. I did whatever I wanted including
