Tried to read this book before I started teaching and I didn't really get it...Yet after teaching courses for several semesters I returned and found it extremely useful for addressing recurring issues in class. Strongly recommend it for anyone who's run a lecture course and wants to improve it! ๐ŸŽ“

Q: Are there any 'golden rules' to help decide what goes into a paper?
A: If a paper contains multiple topics, even if they are all interesting, it gets hard to follow. If 1 story is sliced into many papers it's difficult to see the novelty and readers lose interest. So 1 paper = 1 story

Q: How can I help get my work reviewed faster?
A: Editors are not magic, but you can help them help you by checking that submissions match journal scope & style. To judge this, read papers in that specific journal. And give a good list of 5-10 recommended reviewers who may be interested in the work

1 week ago 3 1 1 0

Q: What factor is most important in choosing a journal?
A: Quality is important because a successful career will be built on a reputation for quality work. Society journals with solid reputations are going to be home to a lot of your work over a successful career, so these are good places to start.

Q: Should I consider adding 'big names' to my paper to help get my work published?
A: Authorship lists should reflect the contributions made to work. Adding an author who did not contribute to the work is unethical and we would never recommend this.

1 week ago 2 1 1 0

Q: If a reviewer signs their review, can I contact them to ask for further clarifications?
A: Generally we never recommend this. Some senior reviewers always sign their reviews, but this should not be considered an invitation to contact them outside the review process.

Q: What advice can you give to students about reducing chances of work being rejected?
A: 2/3 of rejections reflect poor structure or other fixable issues unrelated to the quality of the science. We strongly recomend writing courses and approaching writing as a key skill to be continuously developed

This was one of the 1st #AGU activities in China. Our students kept a panel of 5 editors up very late with a lot of questions about the publication process (we were answering until 21:30!). Some great audience questions to me representing @jgroceans.bsky.social :

It was great to see a lot of students from across China (5000!) presenting their work in Guangzhou this weekend. We chose this conference to run an #AGU outreach event, helping junior students navigate the process of publishing work in quality journals

The Swedish icebreaker Oden had a 1-in-5 chance of reaching Victoria Fjord. No ship had ever explored it. Marine geologists Martin Jakobsson and Larry Mayer made itโ€”and what they found at the glacier face raised more questions than it answered. www.esri.com/about/newsro...

The 11th Geoscience Forum will attract about 5000 participants to Guangzhou in April 2026

For decades the USA was the main source of articles for #AGU journals. Now, for many journals China is the main country of origin. Yet editorial boards and outreach activities do not reflect this, so we are launching workshops across China starting with an Editor event at the 11th Geoscience Forum ๐ŸŒŠ

Many families waited years to find out if their loved ones survived. 77 years later children still had no idea what happened to their fathers. Survivors suffered horrific PTSD and the US officer that sank the ship was so horrified when he learned 800 POWs died that he had to be removed from duty.

I've heard stories before, how POWs broke out but were shot as they abandoned ship, how Chinese fisherman braved retaliation rescuing 384 men in the water, how hundreds of trapped men went down singing "It's a Long Way to Tipperary", but what the film really captures is the tragedy for the families

Lisbon Maru film poster, depicting the ship sinking

I saw a very touching Chinese documentary and it's one of the best war films I've ever seen. In 1942 the Lisbon Maru was carrying POWs to Japan after the fall of Hong Kong. When a US submarine torpedoed the ship, the Japanese abandoned it, nailed the cargo holds shut and left 1,816 men to die

Interesting. The devil is in the detail though; I use a similar concept in class to show how error propagation becomes an issue. Factoring in additionality, and changes to the CH4 & N2O budgets makes the uncertainty large. Spatial decoupling between C fixation and respiration is also a big problem..

I used trains twice this week, the busiest of the year, via a station which handles >300,000 passengers a day. I asked a staff member for their punctuality. This year's data is pending, last Spring Festival 98.7% of trains ran on time... These numbers would embarrass most other rail services.
