#MathsToday in y7 we were working on the concept of metric conversions. In a group with a lot of extra needs we established that 70mm, 7cm and 0.7m are different ways of saying the same amount. Just like I am called Mrs Smith at school, my first name with friends and my nickname with family. All me.

I love questions like this - it reminds me of when a student asked “is there a different formula when the triangle is upside down?”

Mine was disappointing - I was hoping for a snow day only to find that school (20miles south of home) had no snow and a lot of rain. My car is the only one in the car park with even a trace of snow!

I’ve moved “up north” (to the Midlands from London but originally from the south coast so anything north of Oxford!). This morning there was lovely snow but enough to get the car going. I started my 20mile (26min) commute down the A1 to find torrential rain at school and not a flake in sight!

My hand eye coordination and spatial judgement would definitely be an issue with being a welder or brickie. My poor boss would be having to re do everything!

Oh wow! That’s quite something

I can recommend the first 50 pages! (But also Midnight Library if you haven’t read it yet). He has this amazing ability of getting me back into reading when I struggle to find the motivation!

I have just started reading the new Matt Haig book (I love his work but was a bit worried that his newest one is about a maths teacher!) I’m also kind of reading Tender is the Night (F S Fitzgerald). My husband and I are doing Moby Dick at one chapter a night and finally I’ve just got “Poor” audiobk

In here - spoken language for me would be English (United Kingdom) and then whatever language the student would need. The only downside is if you have a large amount of different EAL that you can only choose one language.

We learned that PowerPoint can live translate into subtitles - amazing for some of our EAL learners :)

MINECRAFT Universe Size Comparison
MINECRAFT Universe Size Comparison YouTube video by TriNyte

In #MathsToday we used this great video to discuss the need for Standard Form and practise converting large numbers (we will do small numbers tomorrow). It’s a support class of year 9 and they were amazing! youtu.be/TeHdZJ9gFXk?... #edusky

Just to clarify - the sequence used was for calculators that don’t display the whole sequence of calculations and it feels like you are stabbing in the dark and hoping you haven’t missed anything!

I like this - I normally do a few on the board with my back turned and they can’t see how I formed the number/character and then feed the flames for a bit of a debate. (Also do one number on top of another and ask which was the original answer and which was the new “correct” answer.

After my year 7 lesson yesterday I have decided to get to a shop this weekend to buy some of the cheaper scientific calculators to help the students who have been (in my opinion) “mis-sold” cheap “scientific” calculators. I had to put this on the board. #MathsToday #Edusky

Can any maths teachers help out? There was a question format where you had to give four examples of the thing you are learning about and one of the categories was something that no one else would write. Can anyone prompt my memory please? #Edusky

Morning everyone, first day at my new school and made it here safely. Now eating breakfast in the car and listening to classic FM for a calm start to the day. 🎶#Edusky

Hand drawn diagram on paper of a cartoon style multistory car park, with a cartoon car underneath and then the car in parts beneath that. These each have labels: “Multistory car park”, “Car” and “Parts in a factory”

On the right hand side of the page in line with the drawings I have at the top “Multiples 16, 24, 32”, then an arrow to “Number 8” in the middle and “factors 1,3,4,8” at the bottom.

I like doing this drawing to help - I also make a lovely quip about how I know it’s not to Mr (art teacher)’s standard and it is just a doodle to help me remember.

They are great for doing longer length independent retrieval tasks with older students to help develop the resilience and concentration to sit 90 min exams at the end of year 11!

The TAs that work 1-1 with them every day said it was the most work they had ever done in a lesson). Also a brain break part way through the lesson (guided with some stretching, jogging on the spot etc for young classes with lots of SEN)

(For context I had a year 8 class with 4 non-readers)

If I have a group that particularly struggles with attainment and has a lot of needs I make sure that no matter what, everyone is able to do some of the retrieval. (This included me doing a very basic mixed times table sheet where two of my students used x table grids to fill in the answers…1/n

My commute time will be the same despite moving from a 6 mile commute to a 23 mile commute! (Moved from London to not London!)

Thank you! I’m a bit nervous about it, but if I wasn’t I would be worried!

Thank you - good luck to you too. I will most likely be on here tomorrow morning when I arrive to school stupidly early and sit in the car park! (Moved area and driving half an hour on the A1 so absolutely not risking anything on the first day)

Not from experience by maybe try the exercise where you have two people lying on their back cycling legs with feet pressed up against each other (and make sure they are with someone who is “cycling” backwards) (very sorry, looked for a pic but couldn’t - happy to add more detail if needed!)

Two childhood books one yellow titled “Ten tired teddies a counting book” and the other white called “my first look at numbers” and it has numbers 1-6 as illustration as different pictures. Ten tired teddies is very worn!

I have some of my/our old childhood books in my bookcase. (Including 2 about numbers!)

I don’t know that at 10am in the morning on a Sunday “this weekend” exists in my world. There is next weekend or today. The only exception is a BH where the rest of Sunday and Monday would be “this weekend”

I have also moved and have my classroom curiosities in the spare room along with what seems like a million other boxes!

I get the same shoes every time from Clark’s but I’m worried they are discontinuing them. I’m on pair six and am wondering if I should be stocking up!

Went into Crew to get some work shirts and they said I was by far not the first teacher they have seen this week!
