Happy birthday @cporteous.bsky.social

I've never seen a LEFT JOIN written as a CTE, used in another CTE before.

With the 2nd CTE reading like a recursive one (anchor stmt, union all, recursive stmt) with NOLOCK **AND** index hint.

1. Don't do that
2. If you call the 1st CTE in both parts of the recursive CTE, then its not recursive!!

Congrats to @jborean.bsky.social for receiving the #PSHSummit26 Jeffrey Snover Innovation Award. As last year's winner I was proud to present it and it sure is nice that it happened to be for the person I voted for.

Waiting for PostgreSQL 19 – Add pg_plan_advice contrib module. – select * from depesz; On 12nd of March 2026, Robert Haas committed patch:

Finally, finally, Postgres 19 will get query hints: www.depesz.com/2026/03/22/w... The developers were dead set against this forever, seeing it as a footgun.

ABSTRACT

Spreadsheets are widely used software tools for data entry, storage, analysis, and visualization. Focusing on the data entry and storage aspects, this article offers practical recommendations for organizing spreadsheet data to reduce errors and ease later analyses. The basic principles are: be consistent, write dates like YYYY-MM-DD, do not leave any cells empty, put just one thing in a cell, organize the data as a single rectangle (with subjects as rows and variables as columns, and with a single header row), create a data dictionary, do not include calculations in the raw data files, do not use font color or highlighting as data, choose good names for things, make backups, use data validation to avoid data entry errors, and save the data in plain text files.
