This really is an excellent piece.
For the first time in ages I felt briefly comfortable about the future, given that the tech bros are so fucking stupid when it comes to understanding the human race.
If the tech bros ever create the cancer cure tech it will be $4999.99 a month for the top "cancer free" tier.
Writing is hard because it's so easy to say absolutely nothing at all
What a novel idea.
New favourite person found.
On the 1926 census Alice Knox recorded herself as βsingle (thank god)β and detailed that she was 48 instead of the truth which was that she was 60.
I just know she was class craic
Itβs peppered with hope without feeling glib, occasionally witty without being gimmicky, and harrowing without leaving you fully numb. @nebriefing.bsky.social's brilliance lies in the simple fact that it is harder to ignore than it is to respond to.

In that design if you go in the actual 'front door' the stairs are immediately in front of you with a door to a living room which runs full length front-to-back to the side.
Were it not for a door to the kitchen from the living room, it's as if the house is split down the middle.
Colloquially known as 'back door at the front'.
As previous comment noted, one of the standard designs in Stevenage circa 50s/60s, though often leads into a utility space which adjoins the rear facing kitchens.
Many have now been converted/described by estate agents as 'kitchen diners'.
Did we go up or the one above us slip down?
"The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions." -Robert Lynd, writer (20 Apr 1879-1949)

I read 'truly' as 'rarely' and think I improved matters.
Hard to think of an equivalent when shame or concern for one's reputation has lost so much public currency.
'A failure of image management' sounds very prosaic by comparison.
This morning Iβve seen Olly Robbinsβs appearance before the select committee described as βbox officeβ, while a commentator flagged up another key political moment with the words βbring the popcornβ.
Thatβs one of our main problems right there.
Palantir in the NHS is linked to Mandelson
Mandelson is linked to Wes Streeting
Wes Streeting is defending Palantirβs involvement in the #NHS
Nothing to see or everything to see
Palantir must be removed from the NHS
I'm sure they only bung him the cash from the goodness of their heart and because of his winning personality.
I suppose they *might* want to shape our country to serve their interests, but come on, how likely is that? And as if he would ever run us down.

Since a certain phone company CEO is getting attention for some big predictions today, just a reminder that outside of the very specific verticals where their companies operate, there is no reason to believe a given executive is any better at predictive or descriptive analysis than a random person.
'I did not have cognitive relations with that vetting process'
I cannot emphasize enough how important legal professionals are in the public AI debate.
So many AI predictions reflect FULL ignorance of social science perspectives and how regulation works.
AI is a product, and there are many governance tools available to keep it in check.
Unimprovable headline
From the latest Private Eye, out now.
"Double down" which to me implies an element of risk or recklessness in the face of something more sensible is the sloppiest of sloppy journalism here.
"Pursuing sensible policies consistent with changing circumstances" would be far more accurate.

A picture of a rather dilapidated copy of "The picture of Dorian Gray" There is visible water damage to the cover and the plastic cover is yellowing. Obviously, not evident from the picture but there is a truly foul musty smell emanating from it!
Last week, a gentleman returned this rather dilapidated copy of this famous book to us after 50 years. He had found it in his attic!
Presumably this means there is a pristine copy somewhere in our libraries....

Images of Woman's Weekly flashed through my mind.

This looks absolutely delicious but I could feel my arteries hardening as I watched.
Can I quote you on that?
