I'm home and my contributor copies of @crossroadsfolk.bsky.social Issue 1 are finally here! My essay on the tyrant sun worship in THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE is in here, along with tons of other cool stuff from writers and artists.
Go get yourself a copy!
What are some of the folk horrors you saw growing up?
I got my @crossroadsfolk.bsky.social zine a couple days ago. So well done- great writing, great editing. I grew up watching folk horror on tv, it's close to my heart, so I had to get the stickers, too. I'm only about halfway through, but no doubt the rest will also be great.
I am so happy to hear it!
Imagine not being a witch in 2026. How embarrassing!
Bumping the thread again. Submission form at the end.
This is me! Always been terrified of ghosts and I don't even believe in them!

Sadako's backstory is even more tragic in the book. No wonder she killed everyone who came into her path. Which is why I say...good for her.

He's had a good life
I love that idea!
Oh man. I remember when that whole saga was unfolding.

See, another reason this freaked me out is that the back porch of my childhood home was built over an old well.

And I think he had an asshole professor friend who perved on his students. They kind of turned him into the husband character for the movie and really toned him down.

It's weird because I don't believe in anything paranormal but I still manage to freak myself out about it. Completely irrational.

I absolutely would NOT. Never been one to tempt fate. I'm a grown ass woman who still wouldn't say "Bloody Mary" in front of a mirror.

Who here would totally watch the forbidden tape?

I remember liking the book a lot. Gave some interesting backstory.

It's always great when horror weaponizes science and technology. They're supposed to be logical, quantifiable, so it's all the more unnerving when tech becomes uncanny and strange. Hauntings are supposed to be for Victorian houses, not a VCR.

My first experience with this was The Ring (American version), and it really fucked me up. I guess because TVs are supposed to be safe and comforting. You leave them on when you're home by yourself to feel a little less alone. And they're inescapable.

It's time for #FolkHorrorFriday with Ring (1998)
Kind of in the same boat. Saw the American version first, then followed up with the original. But it's been more than 20 years, so interested to see how that might change my perspective.

Incredibly grateful and flattered that Moreau Vazh of @taskerland.bsky.social wrote a thoughtful and comprehensive review of the first issue of Crossroads. I'm a little emotional about the response our zine has gotten. ๐ฅน
