"Blakeney wasn’t about to let oil companies be the sole beneficiary of price hikes to a commodity that was wholly owned by the province. Instead, Blakeney implemented a 100 per cent windfall profits tax on Saskatchewan-produced oil." paherald.sk.ca/saskatchewan...

A new review of our book Knowledge Under Siege: Charting a Future for Universities was just released in the CAUT Bulletin.
“…Universities are for resistance; they are for the future. And in an increasingly authoritarian world, they are for hope.”

Defining the value of universities has never been so urgent.
Pls join us for this crucial conversation.
Worth noting as the rural municipality south of Regina is about to become the home of the largest data centre in Canada.
The malicious vindictiveness on display here is also how this moment more broadly enforces compliance among those who know better. “Nice job, would be sad if you lost it.”
Harvard wanted to tear down the Gordon Block in 2011 and turn it into a SURFACE PARKING LOT. Council said no. Harvard said at the time the building was "past its usable life" & left it to decompose after that. Years later, surprise (aka no surprise) a fire ultimately claimed it. #yqrcc
Mamdani: When I ran for mayor, I said I was going to tax the rich
Well, today we're taxing the rich...
When did Conservatives become so anti-intellectual, anti-knowledge, and anti-expertise?
I kind of like my bridges, surgery, piloting, & more being overseen by people with years study & experience.
Not everyone has been privileged to study, but ignorance is nothing to brag about
"Canada’s system of public postsecondary education is being hollowed out through chronic underfunding combined with a marketized orientation that values postsecondary education primarily as a pipeline to train students for specific jobs."

I had a great time on the CBC IDEAS podcast discussing the unprecedented wealth & power of billionaires. The world’s 12 richest billionaires currently hold more wealth than the bottom 50 percent of people on Earth. Have a listen: app.magellan.ai/listen_links...

American higher Ed is a golden goose that’s delivered medical, tech, and science innovations, bolstered soft power internationally, and is one of the largest employers in every state.
This admin is doing everything it can to kill it.

Great review in the April/May 2026 University Affairs / Affaires universitaires @universityaffairs.bsky.social by Dr. Ken Montgomery (Dean, Fac of Ed, U of Windsor) of Knowledge Under Siege: Charting a Future for Universities uofrpress.ca/Books/K/Know...
"Orbán’s Hungary has been the model for the global fascist assault on democracy. Maybe it can also serve as a model for its defeat."
Important piece from Jason Stanley for Zeteo on the big story of the day:
A series of posts from journalist Mark Chadbourn reporting on the acceptance speech of Péter Magyar after Hungarian elections: Péter Magyar: "Our country wants to live again. It wants to be a European country again." Mark Chadbourn• @chadbourn.bsky.social • 24m Magyar's speech is powered. From a contact in the audience: "He's basically just asked all the puppets, all the supreme justices, all the heads of media, all the heads of the ministries to leave their jobs tomorrow and not wait to be fired." •.. Mark Chadbourn• @chadbourn.bsky.social • 22m He's announced that Hungary will join the European Prosecution Office so anyone in the country can be charged. Mark Chadbourn• @chadbourn.bsky.social • 21m Magyar: "No mercy, they will need to take responsibility for all their actions." ... Mark Chadbourn• @chadbourn.bsky.social • 20m Magyar says he's starting work with the EU and NATO immediately. "The EU doesn't have to worry anymore."
From new Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar's acceptance speech tonight. This is the absolute BARE MINIMUM platform for any Democrat running for President in 2028.
People will die.
Marginalized, disproportionately Indigenous people will die because of this.
The government has blood on its hands.

Do you want students to be literate?
If you said yes, then unless you're having students strictly reading technical manuals & repair guides, the instruction cannot be neutral. As Freire explained, there can be no teaching of the word, that isn't also a teaching of the world.
“A flag used to distract…electorate from the collection of small fires burning across the province. Schools in Alberta are overcrowded, and emergency rooms are so over capacity that preventable deaths are occurring with alarming frequency.”
