The Pokémon universe goes hard on ecology and climate science The Pokémon franchise, including its recent game Pokémon Pokopia, is inspired by real animals and their ecology. It’s no surprise that so many scientists love to try and “catch ’em all”

My latest for @sciam.bsky.social is all about the real biology, ecology, and climate science that is used to create the world of Pokémon, and how scientists use it to teach science in the real world.

This is just about the most fun I’ve ever had interviewing anyone, and I hope you enjoy! 🧪🌎

To add on about the hippos, they were introduced by drug lord Pablo Escobar in the '80s, then escaped after his death. The problem is, hippo management has been dangerous and costly. So, the gov't is now looking at euthanasia: www.scientificamerican.com/article/colo...

Deep-sea wildernesses are more important than the promise of seafloor mining (analysis) When I set sail on the MV NorSky in the summer of 2008 to probe the depths of Manus Basin off the coast of Papua New Guinea, I believed in the promise of deep-sea mining. As an early-career deep-sea e...

This is a really interesting retrospective from @drandrewthaler.bsky.social, who has had a front row view of the evolving scientific understanding of deep sea mining news.mongabay.com/2026/04/deep...

Fun facts and FAQs about Megalodon, Maryland’s new (and definitely extinct) official state shark This week, Maryland became the first U.S. State to have an official state shark! Otodus megalodon was a really cool shark that is rightfully beloved by many, and Maryland’s Calvert Cliffs are…

This week, my state of Maryland became the first U.S. State to get an official state shark!

I wrote about why Megalodon is awesome, how we know that it's extinct, and what having a state shark means for modern-day shark science and conservation

I'm fine, everything is fine. 🧪🌍🦑🦈

For my fossil experts: is this a fossil, and potentially what is it? Found it in the Peace River while looking for fossil shark teeth. 🧪

*Since I don't have a fossil permit yet and can only keep shark teeth, I didn't keep it just in case it was something I'm not supposed to keep without a permit.

Looking at an aquarium's website that I want to visit soon, and I think this Sandbar shark (#bestshark) is having a bit of an identity crisis 🤣

The four Artemis astronauts embrace inside the Orion Capsule. American and Canadian flags, along with equipment and hardware are surrounding them.

This is such a great photo.

Probably the best of all the #ArtemisII photos.

Diversity, international collaboration, humanities, science, art, engineering, the desire for exploring, the drive of human curiosity, the reward of years of dedicated hard work, and just pure joy.

It's all in there.

Please join us next month for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's "Ocean Encounters: Into the Abyss." Free ,online, April 8, 2026 It will be a distinct pleasure and honor to be on this program with Veronique LaCapra, and Anna Michel of WHOI, and Mackenzie Gerringer of SUNY Geneseo

Explore the mysteries of the deep! The deep ocean is one of the most inaccessible parts of our planet, yet it plays a vital role in supporting life on Earth.

Join us to hear about the technologies enabling deep ocean research, what we can learn from mapping the seafloor, and how life has adapted to thrive in the cold, dark, and crushing pressures of the deep.

For Zoom viewers, WHOI now has American Sign Language interpretation! The event WILL be recorded but you need to register.

Please register at https://www.whoi.edu/ocean-encounter/into-the-abyss/

The "Ocean Encounters" series covers topics in ocean science and technology, and why they matter to society in the context of climate change, conservation, food and energy security, and other issues. The event averages more than 1,000 live viewers per episode (mainly on Zoom, but also on YouTube and Facebook), with thousands more watching the recordings afterwards on YouTube or whoi.edu!

If you don't read French, it's worth translating this article -- or having AI do so.
It highlights how, in lifting content from newspapers without compensation, AI is 'parasitic' and will destroy media, ultimately resulting in lack of material to steal, a 'fundamental tension' in how AI functions.

Our small urban forest in Jamaica – and why forests do not have to be “used” In this part of March, there are several "special days." I cannot keep up, but yesterday, March 21, 2026 was International Day of Forests. I am slightly dubious about this year's theme: Forests and Economies. The image below did not impress me - a hard hat, in some ways a symbol of extractivism, mining, drilling for oil, let's take more!

I'm not comfortable with the theme of this year's International Day of Forests ("Forests and Economies"). Forests already give us so many benefits. Jamaica's Forestry Department has embarked on a forest restoration initiative, after half of our forests were destroyed by Hurricane Melissa.
