My latest for @sciam.bsky.social is all about the real biology, ecology, and climate science that is used to create the world of Pokémon, and how scientists use it to teach science in the real world.
This is just about the most fun I’ve ever had interviewing anyone, and I hope you enjoy! 🧪🌎

To add on about the hippos, they were introduced by drug lord Pablo Escobar in the '80s, then escaped after his death. The problem is, hippo management has been dangerous and costly. So, the gov't is now looking at euthanasia: www.scientificamerican.com/article/colo...
Brazil creates the South Atlantic's largest marine park

This is a really interesting retrospective from @drandrewthaler.bsky.social, who has had a front row view of the evolving scientific understanding of deep sea mining news.mongabay.com/2026/04/deep...
This week, my state of Maryland became the first U.S. State to get an official state shark!
I wrote about why Megalodon is awesome, how we know that it's extinct, and what having a state shark means for modern-day shark science and conservation
I'm fine, everything is fine. 🧪🌍🦑🦈
It was hard and pokey
Wow!!
Weird bone-like potential fossil fragment that is pointed on one end and has three points on the other that look like a person raising their arms to the sky, with the central point thicker than the other two
Same fossil piece from a different angle
The same fossil piece from a different angle
For my fossil experts: is this a fossil, and potentially what is it? Found it in the Peace River while looking for fossil shark teeth. 🧪
*Since I don't have a fossil permit yet and can only keep shark teeth, I didn't keep it just in case it was something I'm not supposed to keep without a permit.
They can identify however they wish, they're still the best to me. ❤️
The picture depicts a sandbar shark with the label that it is a nurse shark
Looking at an aquarium's website that I want to visit soon, and I think this Sandbar shark (#bestshark) is having a bit of an identity crisis 🤣
I like "Coming Home" by Ramin Karimloo, but that might be too niche

Crinoids!
The four Artemis astronauts embrace inside the Orion Capsule. American and Canadian flags, along with equipment and hardware are surrounding them.
This is such a great photo.
Probably the best of all the #ArtemisII photos.
Diversity, international collaboration, humanities, science, art, engineering, the desire for exploring, the drive of human curiosity, the reward of years of dedicated hard work, and just pure joy.
It's all in there.
Black bodied spider with pale legs and a spiky "crown" of setae reminiscent of Sauron's helmet crown thingie, peering over the edge of a dry oak leaf at you

Glorious little Bolinopsis microptera with its dazzling rainbow ctenes, black spots on its meridional canals and lovely lobes.
Ctenophore Day is tomorrow!
Here’s one I saw this morning 😊

What real fucking "AI" looks like. Machine learning is ancient and still absolute peak
Here is a dog cronching popcorn. Sound on for this one.
This is how I pulled out of being tensed up & angry this morning. Maybe it’ll help pals too, even only as a video.
Authors: file your Anthropic Settlement claims! Really!
1. They should have paid you!
2. Even if you would not ever have licensed your material to these people, this is a chance to take /real cash/ out of their pockets -- not speculative valuation on some invented multiple, /currency/
This is a horrible idea & more signatures are needed to help stop this dredging plan in Florida

Please join us next month for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's "Ocean Encounters: Into the Abyss." Free ,online, April 8, 2026 It will be a distinct pleasure and honor to be on this program with Veronique LaCapra, and Anna Michel of WHOI, and Mackenzie Gerringer of SUNY Geneseo Explore the mysteries of the deep! The deep ocean is one of the most inaccessible parts of our planet, yet it plays a vital role in supporting life on Earth. Join us to hear about the technologies enabling deep ocean research, what we can learn from mapping the seafloor, and how life has adapted to thrive in the cold, dark, and crushing pressures of the deep. For Zoom viewers, WHOI now has American Sign Language interpretation! The event WILL be recorded but you need to register. Please register at https://www.whoi.edu/ocean-encounter/into-the-abyss/ The "Ocean Encounters" series covers topics in ocean science and technology, and why they matter to society in the context of climate change, conservation, food and energy security, and other issues. The event averages more than 1,000 live viewers per episode (mainly on Zoom, but also on YouTube and Facebook), with thousands more watching the recordings afterwards on YouTube or whoi.edu!

Fun fact: Gila Monsters who are translocated less than 1000 meters (~2940 stoats) just tend to find their ways back home (Sullivan et al 2004) #2026MMM
Retweet to save a life, this problem comes up a lot for everyone and Ben finally has a solution
If you don't read French, it's worth translating this article -- or having AI do so.
It highlights how, in lifting content from newspapers without compensation, AI is 'parasitic' and will destroy media, ultimately resulting in lack of material to steal, a 'fundamental tension' in how AI functions.
Floofy grey Phidippus jumping spider, a tiny peek of orange booty behind her, on a green leaf tilting her entire head to the side as if she's listening to the ground even though spiders don't have ears
Quiet everyone, she hears* footsteps 👀
This might be the most Illegal Head Tilt Angle I've ever seen on a creature ❤️

I'm not comfortable with the theme of this year's International Day of Forests ("Forests and Economies"). Forests already give us so many benefits. Jamaica's Forestry Department has embarked on a forest restoration initiative, after half of our forests were destroyed by Hurricane Melissa.
Did you know Australian Lungfish (Neoceratodus forsten) can be kinda cute? At least, I think so.
