If you wantna make a 2D fangame, Sonic Worlds NEXT is a nice Godot framework for that. But you should start small with other stuff, like very simple prototypes (e.g. recreating pong or smb1 1-1) to learn the engine, so you can better understand things when you start on a bigger project.
Godot, absolutely. Unity is a bit of a mess and they don't care about their users, and doing a rom hack or mod would be fun but would ultimately limit you and likely best saved for after you have more programming experience. Godot is fully open source with a great community.

Except there's not just old characters to introduce to a new audience, but also new characters to introduce to everyone. I think if we had more time to see what the characters were like normally, seeing how they act in these certain intense situations would be even more impactful.
My only issue with the arc is it just happened too soon, like an event that big happening that early is just a bit much and I think they should have waited longer, that's kinda it the arc itself is super fun

The problem is people aren't really gonna have anything about your project to latch onto, even if all you can show is concept art and a synopsis of the general story or the vibe you're going for that can be enough to get people's attention and give them a reason to care about your game.
You should probably like... show or explain literally anything about what the project is if you're gonna ask people to help with it.

I can give to Shadow Generations is the fact that the font for the ring display HUD is boring and just uses Helvetica so it really clashes
