Introducing @danwmont.bsky.social, a recipient of our Small Grant.
We look forward to following along as Daniel works to define key reproductive habitats for Critically Endangered tope sharks.

In my degree I remember being inspired by projects funded by @saveourseas.bsky.social so its a mini full-circle moment to see myself listed as a project leader (complete with sketch portrait) for them this year! Read about our 2025 small grant here: tinyurl.com/45fj3yj8

Photos uploaded in the wrong order! It's actually linnet (1), stone chat (2), cirl bunting (3)!
A nice mix of female #farmlandbirds during yesterday's ringing session. Cirl bunting (1), stone chat (2), and linnet (3)! #birds @btobirds.bsky.social ๐งช
Amazing work by the team - looking forward to building on their work with our ๐ฆ tracking studies over the next year!

Fascinating to join a #CSIoftheSea with the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme team on two Angelsharks that were found on a North Wales beach in 2023.
๐ Samples from the sharks will provide vital data on health, diet, reproductive patterns, and connectivity across the East Atlantic.

Lots of people told me "I can't arrange a whole group, but if you can make it so individuals can get a spot on a shark research trip, I'd love to come!"
Now is your chance! If this works, we'll do it again.
After a few weeks off, I've returned to the news that 2 of our #tope have been recorded on a telemetry array in South Wales/England! Fantastic to get 1st detections of our animals and insight into #connectivity between MPA's in Wales + England. Where will our sharks go next? #ProjectSIARC #ZSL

Tope are a mid sized shark species which reach a max length of ~2 m and a weight of ~50 kg - so far we've been mainly tagging immature sharks (~1-1.3m) and ~5-10 kg. We are aiming to tag some adults next year to find out if they are using N. Wales as an area to give birth!
A licenced researcher fitting an ID tag to a tope shark which is held in a custom tagging cradle. Tagging typically takes less than 10 minutes, during which a pump is used to supply water to the sharks gills at all times. All tagging is conducted under home office licence.
My day job is more fish orientated! I'm leading research for #ProjectSIARC, the
#OceanPredatorLab, and #ZSL to investigate movements of Critically Endangered tope (soupfin) sharks in North Wales, UK - a seasonal hot-spot! ๐งช๐๐ฆ๐

I'm slowly working towards my

ringing permit in my spare time. Much more arduous task than my Home Office licence for fish tagging! Thrilled to have rung my first kingfisher a few weeks ago, though. What a beauty #birds #ringing #kingfisher
Got to get the hang of bluesky! Boosting this post to relevant feeds! ๐๐งช๐๐
Great to see two more papers from postdoc work at UBC Zoology published over the last few weeks addressing smolt physiology!
