Peak bloom. The bluebell carpets are truly vast in our British woodlands, stretching out in all directions as far as the eye can see. The sights, sounds and smells of the forest are incredibly good for the soul.

Lady’s smock (cuckoo flower) —
four petals in a cross, a quiet member of the cabbage family.

One of the wildflowers I wait for each spring —
and with it, the return of orange tip butterflies.

Their first food. Their beginning.

1/2 Chiffchaff nest construction is underway across the country.
If you hear Chiffs singing in your garden then you might want to try the feather test. These birds line their grass-domed nest with a large no. of feathers.
Set some down & see if a bird arrives - this female came within 5 minutes.

Hold on tight! This Buff-tailed bumblebee queen is brushing grains of pollen out of her hair and into her pollen baskets – spot the bright yellow bulges on her hind legs 💛

On a fine spring day like this, you can find goat willow (aka pussy willow) humming with bumblebees ☀️

Spotted on the coast path above Talland Bay yesterday…

This rather cute looking dark-edged bee-fly (Bombylius major) is deliberately gathering dust on the tip of her abdomen

The fine coating of dust helps give her eggs just enough weight, so when she hovers above the entrance of a ground… 1/3

WILLOW WARBLER is home, on a territory where every year a male sings.

Each year in April this is the song that floors me, that takes me back to a wide-eyed child, falling in love for the very first time with the wild.

In between the April showers, the Wren brings in more moss - insulation, absorbency & comfort are the order of the day, for a very small nest space that may be crowded with wrenlets by the end of the month.

Patch of nettles

Patch of nettles

A patch of nettles can support over 40 insect species. They’re a vital source of food for the caterpillars of peacock and small tortoiseshell butterflies - so please let a few nettles grow!
