Indeed big wow Brig. They raise about £0.5m each year for the hospice, very generous of the company.

So you think you’ve seen a few tulips this spring? I visited Norfolk Tulip Co’s fields today, open to the public to raise funds for Tapping House hospice. Beautiful with a capital B.

Two flowers of a black tulip

Two flowers of a black tulip

Black is, I am told, the holy grail for tulip breeding. Ever so nearly black, this is ‘Queen of the Night, which I inherited with the garden. A gem.

Someone needs to take accountability. What has happened to integrity in politics?

A full shot of the crab apple ‘Sun Rival’ in full blossom.

A full shot of the crab apple ‘Sun Rival’ in full blossom.

Favourite tree in the garden at this time of year, the blossom is something else. A compact, weeping crab apple, Malus ‘Sun Rival’. Planted this about 5 or 6 years ago, performs every year.

A little lazy but did visit a nature reserve down on the Broads to watch a pair of magnificent ospreys that have returned to nest again.

A carpet of bluebells as far as the eye can see in a beech wood. Tree leaves just starting to unfurl.

The bluebell carpet in the Great Wood at Blickling is a very special sight. No wonder people come from miles around to see them. Should last another week or two.

Wild and beautiful.

One thing I thought worked quite well previously and a wide audience could join in was going through colours. Can start with green! Then there’s things like shade tolerant plants, drought tolerance, use of pots, companion planting, borders and beds. Just a few thoughts for the mix.

Snap. I’ve cut right back for the same reason. It’s now smaller amounts of things I really like.

It’s been an exceptional year for huge tulip flowers. Never seen anything like this year before. Anyone else seeing this?

First challenge is exposure as we back on to open fields with little tree cover, so we have a double set of beech hedges to the south and a mixed hawthorn hedge to the west as wind breaks. Secondly the soil is sandy and alkaline, so it’s lots of mulching and growing the right plants.
