Up to the early 20th century, Spain was often yclept GREAT LUZON in Sinitic languages: Tōa-lū-sòng / Daai6leoi5sung3 大呂宋. A case of the colonial power being called after the colony, not the other way round😁

The thing is that this has been true for a long time. Thinking that liberal arts degrees are impractical is received wisdom that collapses under the slightest scrutiny. This claim is only "counterintuitive" if you have bad intuition about higher ed, and, accidentally and on purpose, most people do.

Version 1.0 of the Grammaticon is now online! This has been in the making for over eight years. Quite a few of the entries are still preliminary, but I hope to expand and improve it over the coming months and years. Comments are welcome! An intro text is here: dlc.hypotheses.org/4316

High school Latin classes were like that, "Translate this sentence!" is still an inside joke I'm using with a classmate from back then, with the hidden meaning of "Just wing it!"

The editor-in-chief of a journal has recently gotten in touch with me and asked whether I'd like to join as an editor. I've never done that before, but I'm considering it 🤔

Anyone here got any advice/things I should be looking out for?

Figure shows a comment from a reviewer on my article. The say I wrote "linguistics features" which I totally did and then say "I therefore encourage the authors to have their manuscript proofread by a native speaker or someone specialized in academic English." Guess this means I don't need to read any more student theses! Or teach academic English!

Finally! I got a comment from a reviewer telling me that I should have my article proofread by a native speaker. Or someone specialized in academic English.

And all for a typo in the word #linguistics!!!

I feel like I won a prize.

call for reading material: has anyone explored a notion of at-issueness where something is more at-issue the more it addresses a high-stakes QUD? (where the stakes are external and involve more or less intense consequences, a bit like Stanley's bank examples in interest-relative epistemology etc)
