Regarding the historical context, the game is set in a fantasy world with medieval technology + magic, but with today's understanding and problems relating to queer people.

It's meant to reflect and put the spotlight on what queer people have to go through NOW, not in the past.

Fair point! I'm taking a mostly Eurocentric view of things because it's the one I'm most familiar with and one I can more easily contribute to, but I'd welcome any reading material you have from other cultures!
