A really nice description of Roger Butlin's contribution to speciation biology in JEB by @ruimmfaria.bsky.social and colleagues. Roger is one of the good ones!

A long-awaited, deeply rewarding achievement made possible only by the dedication, perseverance, and passion of incredible collaborators and friends 😍: @anjamwestram.bsky.social @ruimmfaria.bsky.social @carmelofruciano.bsky.social & many others not here
a nice group of people and researchers, nice shores, new research facilities, fantastic Littorina system
In my case, it all changed with a Marie Curie MC fellowship. I know there is not much time left to apply but if you want to come to the sunny Portugal, near Porto, to work on Littorina inversions (adaptation, sex chromosome evolution, speciation),contact me ruifaria@cibio.up.pt to try out for a MC

Fantastic Cátia! Well done! we hope to interact :)
For those interested in sex chromosomes and speciation, Thomas Lenormand from CEFE, University of Montpellier, will visit us and present a seminar about his work on these topics. For more information (and the zoom link), please follow the link here: www.cibio.up.pt/en/events/a-...
If you have a dream of combining genetics, ecology and marine organism, this is for you. If not, this may still be for you!
We are looking for candidates to apply for a FCT PhD fellowship within SEAGEN-CIBIO on evolutionary genomics of marine organisms! Please spread the word.
Top: Topology weightings across chr15 showing how the karamu haplotype is related to the klugii and orientis haplotypes. Upper panel shows three possible rooted genealogical topologies. Second panel shows weights for each topology along the chromosome, smoothed with a 20 kb span. Arrows above the plot indicate the locations of inversions. Third panel shows unsmoothed topology weightings across a 1.5 Mb region corresponding to Inversion 2. Bottom: Ancestry painting across a 100 kb region within Inversion 2, showing ancestry tracts for two homozygous karamu individuals compared to two representative individuals homozygous for the orientis and klugii haplotypes. Coding regions are indicated below the plot, with the candidate gene for background colouration yellow indicated. Green triangles represent the top 10 SNPs for background colour in our GWAS. There is evidence for recombination throughout the supergene region, and specifically in the vicinity of yellow, consistent with the hypothesis that orientis ancestry at this locus (i.e., the B allele) is associated with darker colouration in karamu individuals.

Short insertions and deletions are abundant but are they useful markers in genome scans for divergent selection? Hybrid zones in Littorina suggest they can add to information from SNPs, despite stronger purifying selection:
