a psmc plot showing population size over time for a mammal species
#popgen question: has anyone seen a psmc plot like this? made from a haplotype-phased assembly and variants from dipcall. I guess if it's real, could it be a result of pop struct. from 2e-5 to 1e-6? Could it be a hybrid? What kind of assembly/variant calling artifacts might produce this?
Our #PhD students are enjoying meeting #PopGen Seminar speaker @ulrichtechnau.bsky.social tomorrow! He will tell us about "Evolution of bilaterian traits and mechanisms of cell type diversification: insights from cnidarians". A. We use the adaptive dynamics framework to make theoretical predictions of evolutionary trajectory under trade-offs between growth parameters. B. We assess these predictions using forward simulations mapping the trajectory of evolution on varying the supply of mutations (mutation rate, supply of trait-increasing mutations (mutation bias), and mutation effect size), and calculate new quantities not available in adaptive dynamics, such as time-dependent fixation rates and the time to reach an Evolutionary Stable Strategy (ESS).

Great write up of our study showing that both extrinsic factors (e.g. habitat availability) and intrinsic traits (e.g. body mass and diet) play important roles in shaping patterns of genomic diversity in birds 🦜 🧬 🌏

Effective population size is a key ingredient in indicators used to monitor genetic #biodiversity – and a fundamental concept in population genetics.
But what is it, really? 🧬 We try to explain in our new blog post ⬇️

The focus of the post is the study of the origin, evolution and/or effects of human genetic variation that shapes health and disease.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our scientific community in the heart of London.

I've been developing a new python package that I'm calling "Geneland". It takes DNA sequence data or a precomputed distance matrix (if using RAD-Seq) along with GPS coordinates and outputs an interpolated genetic landscape surface. Similar to Alleles in Space (but prettier). #popgen #evoldir #python

To add one thing: if you have the data to run both classic dN/dS tests and MK tests, choose the latter. dN/dS tests are blind to positive selection in the important, constrained proteome, while MK test will work regardless of constraint, if DFE well estimated.

Hey #PopGen #EEB #PUI friends! Do you have a cool paper demonstrating the power 💪 of "modern" PopGen that would be exciting to upper-level undergrads? I feel like students leave the PopGen unit thinking it's some kind of dead science b/c we're limited to introducing simple models in Evol classes. 😢
The PopGen Vienna Seminar series schedule is ready for the next term (March-June). It's jam-packed with fantastic speakers in #evolution, #genetics, #genomics, #popgen, and more! Details and streaming link signup can be found on our website popgen-vienna.at/news/seminars/
Finally published! We first uploaded this preprint in 2022 but dropped it after frustrating reviews.
It was well received and cited, motivating us to revisit it.
We added new content, including simulations and a proof-of-concept genomic green status assessment.
