It is hard to understand why the EU has not suspended the association agreement with a country that uses sexual violence as a state-sanctioned tool.

🚨 BALSAM SEASON BEGINS 🚨
I was hoping for another week or two before life becomes yanking and slashing this crap but they’re already coming up at Warleigh Nature Reserve.
They’re small now but will be dominating waterways and banks all spring and summer. Seeds mid July, so yank/slash before then.
I would be very happy to host any applicants that are interested in impacts of fishing, anchoring and assessment and management of other pressures on the seabed @sosbangor.bsky.social. Get in touch if you're interested.
I think part of the consideration is also the use of preprints by AI LLMs, which can results 'pollution' of the evidence base when these LLMs are used to summarise.
'When a manuscript is publicly available as a preprint before or during review, multiple versions of the work may circulate and be commented on simultaneously, creating confusion about what aspects have been evaluated and modified and what has not.'
I'd say the role of editors and reviewers is very much to be gatekeepers
'Posting a manuscript on a preprint server constitutes prior public disclosure of the work. This reduces or eliminates its originality and novelty to the Journal, to our readers and to scientific journalists and news outlets.'
'Publishing work that has already been publicly available outside of the peer review process also complicates the establishment of a clear and authoritative scholarly record by creating multiple versions of nearly identical documents.'
Relevant for prospective authors in the ICES Journal of Marine Science’s. The Journal will not consider for publication manuscripts that have been posted on preprint platforms.

This review highlights the need for a more explicit ecosystem-based management approach in scallop fisheries, emphasizing seabed habitat protection and recognizing their role as vital for key life history stages such as spat settlement.

Thrilled to see a leading journal run a special issue on null results — good practice for science, and especially important for conservation where what works should matter more than whether it makes a splashy and positive paper

Grateful to the global inter-disciplinary collaborative effort! 🙏 😊
What does ecosystem #integrity mean in a rapidly changing #Anthropocene biosphere? I argue for a shift from static reference states toward 1) the ecological processes that sustain biodiversity & 2) evolutionary heritage➡️ doi.org/10.1111/rec....

This is Apartheid.
It's morally disgusting - and comes at the same time as Israel is committing an ongoing genocide.
To see the Labour Government defend Israel repeatedly will horrify the British public - it cannot go on like this.

New in JGR Biogeosciences Organic Carbon Burial Rates in Muddy Temperate Shelf Sea Sediments By Muir et al 2026
Understanding how much organic carbon is buried over time is important for estimating the role of shelf seas in climate regulation.🌊
In a new study, scientists analyze OC storage in the Western Irish Sea Mud Belt.

[Scene is a suburban UK street, at night. A voice is coming from a semi-detached house.] VOICE: So let me get this straight: You're a large, magic bunny... [Cut to interior scene. We see a close-crop of the EASTER BUNNY, standing in the darkened living room of the house. The room is all drawn in atmospheric purples and blues, and a quadrant of light is cast on the wall from a streetlight outside the window.] [We are still looking at the bunny. He is holding a boxed Easter egg. We noiw see that the voice speaking is not him but is instead coming from a character outside of frame]. Who's broken into this house at 1am to deposit shop-bought chocolate eggs... EASTER BUNNY [looking awkward]: Yes. VOICE: So people can remember...Jesus.? EASTER BUNNY: Yes. [Pause] Well I mean it sounds weird when you say it like that. It is weird. EASTER BUNNY: Not as weird as you! [Pull wider shot. We now see that the Voice is that of a large HAMSTER, who is holding a digital clock]. EASTER BUNNY: What even is the 'BST Hamster' anyway? BST HAMSTER: *sigh* I'm a large, magic hamster who breaks into people's houses at night and changes their clocks so they feel confused. [Pause. They stand in silence, in the dark, thinking]. [Close up of the Bunny's face. he is still thinking in silence. He looks existentially nauseous]. EASTER BUNNY: Do you ever feel your life makes no sense? [Close up of the BST Hamster. He looks the same - silent, horrified]. BST HAMSTER: Yeah. [They stand in the silent living, dark room, in depressed silence.] [Ends]

Average sediment organic carbon content (OC, %) and (b) the average sediment organic carbon density (SCD, gC cm−3) versus sediment depth (cm) for 19 sediment cores in the Western Irish Sea Mud Belt (WISMB). Error bars represent standard deviations. Dates indicate sediment deposition date estimates (average and range) at 0, 2, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 cm.
Depth-resolved OC content and sediment accumulation rates in the Western Irish Sea Mud Belt (WISMB): OC content (0.15%–1.62%), OC storage (1.30–15.15 gC cm−3), and sediment accumulation rates (0.26–0.37 cm yr−1) vary spatially and temporally

And we're done! It has been a very productive cruise, with almost all plans completed, working with a great and expert team. Now on to analysing the data we collected, and then we'll do it all again in summer on #DY213 to see how temperature and stratification affect C release.

CREATURES OF STORY AND SONG looks through Britain’s stories and poems to rediscover our lost species.
It’s time to remember what people thought about wolves, lynxes, great whales, great auks, sturgeon & more when they were all still here! 🐺🦫🐳💚 @reaktionbooks.bsky.social
