Phew! It has been a busy week at #JMIH2025. I gave a talk on mako vertebral column mechanics, attended a board meeting, a speed networking event, and repped a committee for the meritorious teaching award. Thanks to everyone for making it an amazing meeting.

This is what the government did with 120K+ Japanese Americans in 1942.
I know. I was there in those camps.
Without congressional approval or constitutional authority, the richest man in the world has taken over payroll of the US government.
How is this not a coup?
National Science Foundation freezes grant review in response to Trump executive orders : Shots - Health News : NPR
🚨This is extremely bad 🚨
The National Science Foundation cancelled over 60 grant review panels today, effectively grinding funding of new projects to a halt.
The so-far indefinite pause comes as NSF grapples with the impact Trump's executive orders will have on their grantmaking process.

Whether you get voicemail or staff, be polite and brief:
- This is [name] from [city], zip code [NN]
- I'm an [NSF/NIH] supported researcher
- I'm very concerned about disruptions to grant review and research at NSF and NIH
- NSF and NIH help fund [students, research benefits, health security ...]
If you want to go deep I'd suggest jotting down specifics on that last talking point about how grant funding supports education and scientific discovery at your institution or in your community, but it really doesn't have to be a lot — the signal that their constituents are worried is the key
Reiterating my call to fellow federally-funded scientists: Call your reps, tell them how this hurts science and everything good that comes from science
(Also non-scientists, and scientists without federal funding! But the more of us who can directly speak to the impacts of these freezes the better)
The U.S. has one of the best scientific research ecosystems in the world. Freezing NSF panels is how you dismantle that. Slowly, painfully, and catastrophically. Science is not a luxury—it’s our backbone

Yeay @altmetric.com you have formally made Bluesky a good space for academics.
