Also: look up Zhang Shan. She won gold at the Barcelona Olympics in 1993 in skeet shooting.
Skeet shooting had been a mixed gender event since the 60s, but after her win, they segregated the genders. And in the next Olympic Games, they literally didn’t even have a women’s skeet shooting category.

Mary Louise Adams's non-comprehensive list of sports where this happened: bobsled, synchro swimming, skijump, skeet shooting (in 1996, after a woman won at the Olympics!), and of course figure skating (where a woman beat all the men in the 1908 Olympics)
If you want to be impressed by Bruce Lee, just listen to real interviews. He was more astute than the sayings attributed to him, real or false.

Image carousels are terrible, who asked for this??? Just let me see all the pictures at once!
Even in the quote post in the demo, you can BARELY tell there are more photos to see. 🫠
Please please please at least make them optional.
Oh gosh it really is the ~year of *serious* serious historical #cdrama huh youtu.be/LiBBKqXjB2s
Another set in the Ming Dynasty. (🙄😒 guns)
For millions of parents, child care costs more than rent.
Moms are quitting jobs they love because they can't even FIND child care.
And Republicans' response tonight? A blank check for ICE.
A lady in the grocery store asked me why some eggs were white, and some were brown… I told her the brown ones were whole wheat...
we're gonna need more Orcas
💯
Postscript: the author talks about an unhoused woman sitting on the ground because people are kinder, and that hit me in the gut. As an ambulatory wheelchair user, I often have to carry myself in certain ways to avoid hostility, and those ways don’t usually affirm my dignity and right to space.
Of course, there’s overlap, particularly in the US, of unhoused populations and disabled populations, thereby heightening distaste for both.
In short, our society makes this “problem” for itself by failing to take care of its vulnerable and failing to challenge social prejudices.
(Reading a web novel so no pages - went with chapter 42 instead).
Pick up the nearest book, turn to p. 42, and post the second sentence.
“The fresh scent of the forest after rain seemed to have melted into her very blood, tingling at the tip of her heart, making it itch and burn.”
Yuuuummm
In fairness to his memory...I've spent four years researching and writing a book about gay history that actually DOES aim to teach people stuff. But some of youse guys have to cure yourselves of what I call Yoda syndrome, seeing us as beloved ancient peapods who might cough some dying wisdom at you.
Oh that was rly interesting. Some other aspects ppl have mentioned other times is that China’s internal mkt = so big they don’t have to try to bother w/ wider/int’l appeal. & 😅☠️ re J Chou - made me think of a reel where person was raging re learning Mandarin in Tw cuz everyone just slurs their words
Lolsob I’m the same. It’s like I can’t find the scissors but I can remember what happened in a conversation when I was eight and it keeps me up way too often at like 3 AM
Look, if you want to figure out some way to use crime to bring the rich to heel, I have ideas.
People with preexisting conditions also don’t deserve to die
I don't particularly like this change. I'd love the photo carousel as an *optional* feature when making a post. The original 4-image grid is great if you want to show off multiple photos at once. The carousel just hides the other photos and makes it less likely that someone will see them.
Vaccines were once so uncontroversial that McDonald’s restaurants put the childhood immunization schedule on their tray liners.
Now, as the U.S. government sows doubt, preventable diseases could come roaring back.
So RFKJr is ALSO wrong in another way! To get a $10 drug to be a $600 drug, it would have to go up in price by 5900%, not 600% or even 6000%. And anyway that's only for an increase. A drug going from $600 to $10 is a price drop of about 98.3% (on the price tag, you'd call that "98.3% off")
*ADDENDUM: A previous version of this thread messed up wording, and said "going up by 600% means being 6 times as expensive." It would be 7 times as expensive, because the INCREASE is 600%-- the price isn't just 600% (6x) what it was. This wording ambiguity also confuses people--even me sometimes!
I wrote about the upcoming Paramount-Warner Brothers merger, the open letter rallying talent against it, and why it’s bad for Hollywood, freedom of speech, and audiences for @avclub.com.

Sincerely, much of the poison in American communities is from this belief that tragedy doesn’t happen to people who are good and careful and “healthy” or whatever.
And so much of that comes from society being force fed the idea that everything happens for a reason.
