Cabin Boy, by Henry Scott Tuke, late 19th c. A cabin boy was a young servant on merchant ships. They were commonly runaways, orphans. This provided an entry into maritime work, where they performed arduous labor.

Tuke worked during a time when homosexuality was criminalized, so his approach was layered with discretion. While widely respected in his time, his art later fell out of favor. Today his art has regained prominence and is especially recognized for its subtle homoeroticism.
