Color photo of Tobias S. Buckell, a man with a short salt-and-pepper beard. A brown hat covers his hair, and tinted glasses with wire frames shade his eyes. He wears a blue-gray blazer, blue jeans, an oyster-colored button-up, and a gold band on his left hand. He stands in front of a neutral backdrop, adjusting his cuffs and looking into the camera with a small, knowing smile. Photo by Marlon James.

Color photo of A.T. Greenblatt, a fair-skinned woman with black hair worn long and straight, without bangs. She stands partly obscured by green (foliage?) with what might be a tree trunk or a dirt path behind her. She smiles radiantly into the camera.

This almost never happens to me. Meanwhile my neighbor friend says she gets it basically every time she gets on a bike. So I figure it's my duty to scare the shit out of the few who do it to me so they'll think twice. Dudes in gas guzzling tanks are, pretty universally in my experience, giant babies

Biking yesterday a guy the color of strawberry milk in a rusty f150 the color of necropolitics told me to "get the f out of the road" just as I would in fact have done so, causing me to stop and hold him up 5 minutes haranguing him about it's not his road and if he doesn't like it he can run me over

For an interface design class in compsci undergrad in 2001, I wrote a review of a Discman. I talked about how it had buttons that provided tactile AND auditory feedback! Didn't see reason at the time to praise that it didn't advertise to me, surveil me, steal my data or force-install upgrades

Video: Heavy Rain Brings Flooding to Michigan and Milwaukee Heavy rain and melting snow flooded parts of northern Michigan, closing roads and filling dams to near capacity. In Milwaukee, heavy rainfall forced freeway closures and left vehicles stuck in rising ...

There’s no snowpack in California, New York is as hot as summer, and this is happening in Michigan.

Such climatic changes will get exponentially worse as the planet heats up, destroying our resources and stability.

We need to stop using fossil fuels — now.

Among what I hate most about LLMs shoved down my craw like I'm a foie gras goose is being forced to compare good, real writing to it. Rereading this poem, I think, "AI could never", and "THIS is why we don't want authors smooth-braining their words before they submit". Every line shocks with newness

The more LLM writing gets pushed at us, the deeper into the dark woods of syntax my prose will go. I'm reading older and older books the more they push this generic window pane style. I will use semicolons in ways LLMs can't even imagine.

I'm proud to get to read this one because I miss doing audio narration, and also because I'm a lapsed Catholic and this story digs into the deep, abiding conflict in that whole "dominion over the earth" question, the imperative to do as Christ would, and the strictures of obedience to authority

DarkSky reads For many, night and darkness are associated with fear, or at least with insecurity. We worry about what might be lurking in the shadows or what lies just beyond the edge of sight.

Today is the start of #InternationalDarkSkyWeek! 🌃 inspired by @darkskyintl.bsky.social's "Go dark with a good book," we'll be highlighting several of our new and upcoming titles that celebrate the dark nights which continue to inspire speculative fiction authors' bright imagination. 🪐🌌

Hey everybody! I'm working on a #solarpunk novel due out year after next. It revolves around reintroducing prairie dogs to rewilding prairie land. Below is my research list to date. What would you add to it?

Chinook salmon found naturally hatching in Upper Klamath River for first time in a century The Klamath Tribes are celebrating evidence of Chinook salmon spawning in Klamath River tributary.

After big dams on the upper Klamath River in far northern CA were removed in 2024, Chinook (king) salmon migrated upstream for the first time in 100+ years--and now they have hatched.

Yeah, Mackenzie Scott is a fascinating case. She is literally ignoring the SOPs of philanthropy in order to give away wealth as quickly and efficiently as possible and she’s still getting richer. At her level it is impossible not to make money. Tax billionaires, A LOT.
