As my kids might’ve said at one point, “very meta.” 🤓

Was taught its originally from the Japanese word for blur, and rhymes with okay, so sounds more like bo-kay, but I’ve heard it pronounced like that, as well as bo-keh (like a cough), and haven’t corrected anyone yet. 😸

Yes, though I’m not sure it helped 😆

In printing, there’s a rich history of terminology, with words used in digital settings that were originally used in the days of type setting, like Font.

Of all the terms, when practicing typesetting, was most surprised to learn a “cliche” was originally a block of oft-used type or filler graphic.

In boxing, like sailing, there are some terms that have been incorporated into the general language, like hitting below the belt/low blow, saved by the bell, and throw in the towel.

Personally, I always thought “slap happy” was a funny, and apt description of what a few punches to the head gets ya.

Some common photography terms:

“Chimping”: The habit of obsessively checking the LCD screen after every single shot.

“Glass”: ones lenses, often more important/expensive than the camera alone.

“Dust Bunnies”: Annoying specks of dust on your sensor that show up as dark spots in your photos.

In photography, we’ve got a bunch, primarily centered around the key concepts of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO (a TLA that stands for international standards organization, but has more meaning).

My fave term is Bokeh: The aesthetic quality of the out-of-focus background blur.

In technology, we’ve got acronyms for everything, so much so that you can tell an expert from an amateur fairly easily, as experts don’t use TLAs without knowing what they stand for, and mean.

What’s a TLA?

Three letter acronym.

I’m at least an amateur in a number of areas, each with their own cant.

As already mentioned above, sailing has hundreds of terms, many integrated such as ship-shape, or bitter end; some with infamous humorous definitions, such as a “yacht race:” a gathering of boats going in different directions.
