Check out this interview with Simone Probst, doctoral researcher ETH Zurich, on real-time moonquake analysis with fibre optics. She explains how DAS could transform lunar seismology by enabling continuous, high-resolution measurements of subsurface structure.
The Swiss Seismological Service at ETH Zurich is looking for a doctoral student for an applied research project on the seismic detection, localisation, and characterisation of explosion events in underground ammunition storage facilities. #phd #jobalert
Weathered rock layers beneath the soil influence how groundwater moves during storms. The findings of a new study, led by ETH Zurich researcher Seulgi Moon (formerly UCLA), help explain when and where shallow landslides occur and could improve hazard prediction.
Community Science Program New Investigator (FY26) Congratulations to our 2026 CSP New Investigator recipients! Nicole M. Fernandez ETH Zürich Elucidating microbial host-virus dynamics and metabolic plasticity underlying biogeochemical cycling in subsurface groundwater ecosystems.
From our FY26 New Investigator call: @nicolefernandez.bsky.social will use metagenomics & geochemistry to probe how viral-host dynamics drive biogeochemical cycling in Sierra Nevada aquifers @eth-eaps.bsky.social

The ground-penetrating radar of NASA’s Perseverance rover has found signs of a river-and-delta system at Jezero that is buried deep beneath the surface and might be 4.2 billion years old. The study, led by UCLA, used radar data to study layers of sediment buried more than 35 meters below ground.
Glaciers need our attention more than ever.
On 21 March (World Day for Glaciers), join us at ETH Zurich for a unique programme between research, fairy tales & virtual reality.

A research team, led by @johansix.bsky.social and @jordonhemingway.bsky.social, has discovered that large blackwater lakes in the peatlands of the central Congo Basin are releasing ancient carbon. In the future, these lakes could become a significant sources of methane and impact the global climate.
In the study, they show that the first melts generated in buoyancy-driven mantle upwellings form at around 250 km depth and are kimberlitic, CO₂-rich silicate melts produced by redox reactions involving carbon.
Publication alert: "A universal concept for melting in mantle upwellings" – Researchers from ETH Zurich report a new framework for understanding how melting begins in the Earth’s mantle and how these melts evolve during ascent.
