Thank you for the shout-out! This is the thesis work of the brilliant @emilyatlas.bsky.social in Jim's lab. Sadly, Jim passed away before the work was finished, but his mentorship lives on in this work.

Give it a read! A big shout out to Nico, Brian, Sihao, Yuri, Caleb, and Holland. And to Jim, who is always in our hearts.

When several neuromasts are stimulated simultaneously, these patterns are encoded sparsely, and neurons separate patterns through nonlinear integration.

He found that neuromasts show no topographic organization in the hindbrain, yet neurons are highly discriminative of stimuli.

Nico and Brian built a single-objective lightsheet microscope along with an offset stimulation arm. That allowed Nico to play the lateral line "like a piano" and stimulate any combination of neuromasts he wanted.

It's also my first paper in Systems Neuroscience! So it was quite a ride!

Optogenetic interrogation of the zebrafish lateral line reveals brain-wide neural circuits involved in pattern separation Zoology; Neuroscience; Sensory neuroscience

It's finally out! Our paper on optogenetic interrogation of the lateral line: www.cell.com/iscience/ful...
This one involved a lot of sweat and tears, and it was a real tour de force. It was also the last paper we got to write with Jim, so it's a special one (and hence, the tears).

PSA: around 5-8% of the population has a color vision impairment for red/green.

Many talks at #2025ICDB still use red-green LUTs on slides that are not accessible to everyone.

Changing to more accessible colors is doable and easy.

We can do better.

Composite drawing of labeled efferent and afferent neurons. HRP was applied to a lesion of the midbody line branch of the right posteriorlateral line nerve (PLLn). The Irsim did not include the dorsal (D) oroccipital(0) branches. Labeled affercnt neurons of the posterior lateral lineganglion (PLLg) terminate in the hir:dbrain (PLLt). Three types of neurons (RELL, ROLE, and DELL) project axons into the posterior lateral line nerve. Only a single cell of each type is shown. This is a composite drawing traced from two preparations sectioned in the horizontal plane. Scale bar = 50 um

Published 40 years ago, Metcalfe et al. were first to fully characterize the lateral line (a series of sense organs on skin that detect water flow) in #zebrafish larvae. Included within this seminal piece are meticulous hand-drawings that are commonly found in Kimmel's papers. #ZebrafishFunFacts 🧪

If you have been affected by the fires in LA, or are concerned about your ability to keep precious Drosophila strains going during the latest funding crisis, we will host your strains as a backup. Please email me.

Please amplify. If you are also able to host fly strains, add your name as well.
