Drawing the rhinos and associated fauna of the ashfall beds. I would love to recreate this in 3d but I think to do it justice I would need more info and data than currently is available to me

#Spinosaurus and #Tameryraptor were both found in the Bahariya Formation, representing Cretaceous Eygpt. While Tameryraptor had teeth specialized for slicing flesh off of large animals, Spinosaurus had conical teeth more suited for fish! www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXMC...

Excited to announce that my second manuscript, “Fossilised Melanosomes Reveal Colour Patterning in A Sauropod Dinosaur” has been published in
@royalsociety.org !! Diplodocus scales are complex and diverse, and it turns out their color patterning was even more so. A 🧵🦕 1/26

Lesmesodon edingeri, a cat sized Hyaenodont from the #Messel Pit. We only have 4 fossils from this species, all still suckling age. Would be an early horse’s nightmare as an adult though (dissection in thread) #sciart (done in 2021)

Digital illustration of the late Cretaceous tyrannosauroid dinosaur Nanotyrannus lanciensis in a foggy flooded open forest. The dinosaur is surrounded by warm fall foliage, palmettos and reeds. It is pulling sharply at a bit of sinewy meat from the neck of the carcass of a large softshell turtle, Axestemys in some shallow water. A small possum-like mammal, Didelphodon, is disturbed by this, hissing and splashing at the tall dinosaur

A foggy morning in late Cretaceous Montana. The carcass of a large softshell turtle becomes a battleground for Hell Creek's two most ferocious apex predators...

I'm a little late to nano hype but I've got to fill my quota for one non-avian dinosaur per year

I've been working on a fully animated video about #Nanotyrannus since the paper dropped. I wanted to share a scene of a #Tyrannosaurus rex & N. lethaeus walking alongside each other, mainly for visual comparison. (Walk cycle animation rig made by @tylerstoneart.bsky.social in #aftereffects)

Just posted some new #paleoart to #Patreon (www.patreon.com/c/markwitton), full images coming soon. For now, here's a nigh-on-midnight special preview of one new piece, just for other folks who really should be off their screens already: a baby mammoth chasing ducks. Some mammoths are just jerks.

Bird nesting in the Cretaceous! This is the illustration I did for a new paper by Lauren Wilson and colleagues that is published TODAY in Science

The new paper describes an assemblage of fossils that includes both chicks and adults from multiple species of Late Cretaceous birds!

A momma Homotherium accompanied by her two playful cubs on a snowy field. The animals are rusty-colored with some light cream and white lighlights, mirroring the colors of the environment around them.

Even though I did kinda jump on the badwagon back when the frozen Homotherium cub was published, I decided to focus on the adult interpretation, though I knew eventually I would like to do something featuring cubs. And here it is! A nice family portrait.
