Opinion | Measles Took My Daughter. This Is What I Want Everyone to Know.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a rare but fatal side effect of #measles infection, which manifests years after a kid recovers. This story of a family who lost a 10-year old to it is heartbreaking. Renae was too young to be vaccinated when she caught measles. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/21/o...

Good policy should always begin by considering the needs of the most vulnerable and excluded people. I'm also interested in how this plays with tentative proposals in the digital ID consultation to introduce digital ID from either
birth or at the age of 13.

This whole thread says it so well. I see a lot of people engage with AI "so they understand it better". Most of those people then start to find it fun. Which, fine. But they are supporting harmful infrastructure and making harm more likely.

Feels kinda silly to say that rich people from the center to left of things politically can’t build a successful media environment when the onion is doing it basically using donations from semi-employed forum goblins

The average person doesn’t give a fuck if AI has some niche use where it actually excels if used properly. In fact, that is what a tool is *supposed* to do and none of us will have a problem if it is used like that. What we see is AI fucking up real life in a massive way.

Headline sounds bonkers and unbelievable but the original story comes from Ronan Farrow's long read on Altman for The New Yorker

I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.

Some good news. It was a close run thing but Robert Howard missed out on being President of the Royal Society of Psychiatrists by 1.07%

Being an arch friend of Wessely & vile to people with ME & LC online with clearly delusional false psychiatric views of the condition - this was a near miss.

The R word is absolutely a slur but I also want us to consider whether we want elected officials to use any kind of ugly, unkind language. The meanness is the problem, the slur is the symptom. Slurs require censure, yes, but the thing that puts me off the most is that he spreads ugliness

I am genuinely still angry about some of the conversations I had with men in the early 2000s, when they said things were "fine now" and I should pipe down.

Ah, I meant have you got a sense of why they've stayed? My local labour councillor is staying because she thinks the party is worth saving.

Sincere question from a n00b: what is your take on local Labour Party members standing for election not changing parties?

I keep encountering, online and off, people who believe if an unethical tech becomes functional enough, that will make all the naysayers abandon their concerns and start using

That is, if LLMs become good enough then surely we will look past the deception, violations, abuse, and extremist politics?

we're good at being animals who live in the world, and so we don't pay that much attention to it. we're worse at language. and much much worse at logic. so we pay attention to those things and we think of them as what intelligence is. we've solved chess, we're still working on "loading a dishwasher"

‘Safeguarding via algorithm’: Coventry doubles down on Palantir ties with new £750,000 contract The council’s initial children’s services contract with Peter Thiel’s AI firm caused an outcry. Now the deal has been renewed – with a 50% price rise and a new campaign to stop it, reports Max Colbert

🔴 NEW: Coventry City Council has renewed its contract with Palantir for another year, at an inflated cost, despite it previously being under review following staff backlash.

This comes as a new local campaign is launched to remove them.

I liked this post! But I still don't understand why we think a non-deterministic tool could do deterministic work? Am I missing something?

If this was a different kind of company, would we accept this kind of frankly bananas rhetoric?

I know a lot of folks who use Claude and yeah it's probably fun but do you think this is a company that can be trusted to have good judgment? I don't believe this statement but it makes them seem nuts

Isn’t it weird that every ai startup is impossibly unprofitable? Or that Anthropic and OpenAI subsidize their subscriptions in a way that no other company has ever come close to? Or that nobody can really explain why it matters in the present tense?
