Hampshire College holds 'transfer fair' for students looking to complete degrees On Monday, Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, held what officials called a transfer fair for students. The unique liberal arts college announced last week it would close permanently in mid-May for most students.

Some students said it was pretty chaotic. Mt. Holyoke will take only 30. Amherst seems to have set the bar for credits at a height that rules out almost all 1st-year students

The Necessary Pain Involved in Blogging (if you want your work to be preserved beyond your lifespan) I am thinking a lot these days about my own mortality. That’s not because I am obsessed with death or anything of the sort. It’s more that my health problems...

I've been reflecting on the challenges of maintaining a blog that's preserved long-term. Balancing the cumbersome process of digital preservation with the ease of instant publishing is tricky, but it's worth ensuring my work persists.

Border-area mass surveillance and its resulting harassment is something you'll hear about if you talk to any person that lives near the border or who has to cross it regularly.

If you’re a Hachette author you should be talking to your editors and teams about this. If they’re using AI to counter AI, it’s still AI. And it may also be giving your work to the machine, serving it up on a contractual platter.

Rümeysa Öztürk settles with US government and returns to Turkey The former Tufts University student who was detained by federal immigration authorities last year says she has reached a settlement with the government over longstanding legal issues.

“The time stolen from me by the U.S. government belongs not just to me, but to the children and youth I have dedicated my life to advocating for.”

It's extremely sad that we are forcing people like Rümeysa out of our country. She represents so much of what should be great about the United States.

The U.S. Senate race in Maine: LaFlamme burns with hope Maine is a sleepy little state, mostly forgotten aside from those who vacation here and the recent influx of influencer types who have discovered the state’s robust food scene and natural wonders.

I am wondering if @mayor.nyc.gov is aware that today is #NationalLibrarianDay. A good way to uplift librarians in NYC and all library workers is to pay them more. Stick to your campaign promise and this will be a good start.

Read that again. This Louisiana bill forces homeless people to choose between jail and "treatment"—and if they can't pay for the latter, they will be forced to perform unpaid labor.

The historical precedents are clear: convict leasing, Black Codes, debtor's prison.

To add to this excellent thread: AI detectors DO NOT WORK. At all. They are wildly unreliable, offering false positives and false negatives so much that if you are paying for one you are being grifted.

many non-immigrant minnesotans never had to interact with the injustice of immigration. now they have.

Virginia Governor Vetoes a Ban on Plea Deals That Waive People's Constitutional Rights - Bolts Abigail Spanberger blocked a bill to bar prosecutors from pressuring Virginians to waive protections against unreasonable police searches as a condition of pleas.

NEWS: Virginia's governor vetoed a bill late last night that'd have banned prosecutors from pressuring Virginians into waiving their constitutional rights.

That's right, local prosecutors often get defendants to sign away Fourth Amendment protections to get a plea — for years.
