Brain’s protective barrier stays leaky for years after playing contact sports Nature - Damage to the blood-brain barrier is linked to immune changes and cognitive decline.

The blood–brain barrier can be damaged and leaky decades after an athlete retires from contact sport. This leakiness seems to trigger a lasting immune response that is closely tied to cognitive decline

🧵 New preprint! Our 4-lab team evolved Streptococcus pneumoniae in antibiotic-treated mice of varying immune states and discovered something surprising: bacteria rarely evolved resistance. Instead, they found a different way to survive — by rewiring RNA turnover.

How ageing harms the body’s response to raging infection A gene that protects against sepsis in young mice raises the risk of death in older mice with the condition.

These results hint that ageing lowers immunity in unexpected ways

Legend David Baltimore died yesterday. He understood the way things should work: "the real contribution of MIT is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. It takes ideas seriously, but the people are relatively informal. They are not self-aggrandizing the way academics can be."

How an Alzheimer's peptide and a blood protein may combine to drive early disease pathology - News A new study by researchers from The Rockefeller University identifies one possible means for the drug's impact on patients.

New research from the #StricklandLab suggests that amyloid-beta (Aβ) oligomers and the vascular protein fibrinogen may, when forming a complex, contribute to Alzheimer's disease. #RockefellerScience

But blocking or reducing DGAT2 (using a cool new drug developed by @chopralab.bsky.social ) restores microglial phagocytosis of Aβ and thereby reduces plaque load and neuronal damage in a preclinical model of #Alzheimer’sDisease

Microglia are the brain’s resident immune cells & natural phagocytes, but they stop reducing amyloid deposits from Alzheimer’s disease brains for unknown reasons. We found that microglia increase their lipid droplets and lose their phagocytic capacity with increasing Aβ exposure from amyloid plaques
