i know this makes a terrible lib but i think we can recognize our nation's historical sins while at the same time refusing to be defined by them--at the same time, aspiring to *actually be* all those things we said we were--

Screen cap of an article from The Wirecutter:

When I moved to Denmark, I learned I was wrong.

Picture this: I was freshly in Copenhagen, and I was fresh on a bike, commuting like the Danes but constantly arriving to important places freezing cold, with my pants somewhere on a scale from damp to soaked.

The true Copenhageners, by contrast, lived up to their reputation as global fashionistas. Rain or shine, they arrived at their destinations looking chic—less tortured by their commutes, it seemed, than invigorated by them. What was I doing wrong? I wondered, my wet jeans dragging across the floor.

Soon, I discovered their secret. They weren’t just wearing raincoats over their clothes, they were also wearing rain pants.

I bought the first pair of rain pants I could find, at a Danish big-box store. They were so huge on me that the first time I put them on, my partner said, “Nice Hammer pants.”

No, they didn’t look cute. But, much like face masks and pimple patches, they were a means to an end. I loved sitting in Danish class in my puffed-sleeve shirt and totally dry wide-legged trousers, my new rain gear dripping on the classroom coat hooks behind me.

TIL Danish bike rides wear rain pants, because of course they do. The Wirecutter reviews rain pants. It doesn't look like they do gift links, so use your Libby app.

Vibe check: want an express bus lane on the Hayward/San Mateo bridge so you can get from the peninsula to the East Bay? The regional transit planners at MTC are making their "Bay Area 2050" plan. Next week is the vote and they're trying to kill that express bus lane proposal at the last minute

We’re at Great Highway & Ulloa where a driver killed a 68-year-old pedestrian on Friday. Had this happened 2 months later it’d be a park and she’d be fine. There were no deaths from May 2020-Aug 2021 when it was car-free. Car-free & car-light spaces make cities safe for all.

#SanFrancisco now faces a massive city budget deficit, layoffs, & service cuts. It’s been caused, in part, by #SF firefighters. They succeeded in locking into place an inefficient and ineffective response system, created more than 20 years ago. SF should pass a new initiative to undo the damage.

we should be concerned about the impacts of social media on kids and teens, but i don’t think we’re worried nearly enough about what it’s doing to middle aged people and seniors

I'm an American software engineer. "US Tech Workers" doesn't represent me. They don't represent anyone I know.

America's housing stock is the oldest it's ever been and just keeps getting older. We don't have enough homes in this country and too much of what we have is dated and decaying.

The fact that Disney bought Star Wars and bought the Muppets and haven’t done a Muppets Star Wars is a crime.

One of the most subtly insane aspects of the unrelenting car dependency we’ve deliberately built across North America is the incredible reluctance we have to remove the driving privilege, even from those who clearly are a danger to themselves & others, because “people have to drive.”

Cargo bikes are the ultimate parental cheat code in San Francisco.

Tonight the traffic to pickup my younger kid from school was insane. Would’ve taken me 20+ minutes to drive. Made in just under 8 minutes on the bike.

More parents would do this if they felt safer, @daniellurie.bsky.social

I don't want to buy a car, but for $7,500 my spouse and I could get some great e-cargo bikes that'd cover 300+ days worth of our transportation needs

Parking Mandates Are Keeping Kids Out of Daycare - Sightline Institute But cities can ditch these arbitrary rules and help families out of the daycare desert.

“Even as the majority of families live in childcare deserts, jurisdictions that enforce mandatory parking minimums make it difficult or impossible to permit new daycares if the sites are unable to meet that arbitrary asphalt standard, worsening the shortage.” ½

California to offer EV rebates if Trump kills $7,500 tax credit, Newsom says California is prepared to offer state tax rebates for electric vehicle purchases if the incoming Trump administration scuttles the federal EV tax credit, the governor said.

Any EV rebate for Californians should also count towards e-bikes or allow residents to direct their rebate's worth of funding to the transit agency of their choice. Some people's EV is transit like @sfbart.bsky.social VTA, @rideact.bsky.social @gocaltrain.bsky.social

Netflix - please stop minimising the end credits of movies to suggest something else. Let viewers enjoy the soundtrack and see the cast and crew that worked on the film. We'll exit it ourselves when ready to.
