A me-occultation 🤪
Posts by Dr. Raphael Marschall
Oh, wow, that’s so cool 🤩
Why „me“?
Comet Halley's nucleus as seen by Giotto. A lumpy, elongated comet nucleus fills most of the frame, set against deep black space. Bright, hazy jets of gas and dust stream from sunlit areas on the right-hand side, creating a faint glowing veil.
40 years ago, the Giotto mission was writing history:
🛰️ ESA's first deep space mission
☄️ first cometary close flyby
⏰ and later on, first reactivation of a spacecraft
The success of Giotto inspired our Rosetta mission and together laid the foundation for our Comet Interceptor mission. 🔭 🧪 1/3
Any Sydney-based astronomers here? A team at Andalucia is coordinating an occultation campaign for one of Jupiter's small (2-5km) irregular moons, #Kallichore (a candidate for an #ESAJuice flyby) that'll be passing in front of a star at ~12:20UT on March 18th.

Thanks, Nick!
Thank you, Luke! It was wonderful of you to take the time to join. I hope you had a good week in Bern so far.
It still seems unreal to me that humans will soon be flying back to the moon! They will be returning to Earth at a speed of 40.000 km/h, the fastest ever reentry of a crewed spacecraft.
This remastered video shows a similar reentry from the #Artemis 1 mission back in 2022 at 9x speed. 🔭🧪
I've ~stabilized a short piece. Awesome video! 👍
I don’t want to give it away here but will post it with proper alt text in one of the next posts.
What was I looking down on here?
A) clouds
B) ocean
C) snow dunes
It was really quite the view 🤩
Model of the International Space Station hovering above the entrance hall at Bremen airport.
Just arrived in Bremen, Germany, to go work on an ESA M8 mission proposal and the airport here has a beautiful model of the International Space Station (ISS) 🤩
Thank you, Simeon!
Thanks!
Thanks, Meg!
Thanks!

It‘s a beautiful day here in Bern and my first day as a professor at the @unibe.ch. Excited but also humbled about what is to come.
Wishing everyone a good start into this new week!
You may have seen pictures, but have you ever seen video of a gigantic jet #TLE from space?
Astronaut Jeanette Epps captured this incredible sequence on July 20th, 2024 for the DTU/@science.esa.int Thor-Davis experiment. 🧪🔭

Submitted paper with the title "The Astrosky Ecosystem: An independent online platform for science communication and social networking"
On Monday, we're going to be arXiv-official! 🔭☄️
We just submitted a short paper outlining our project to the arXiv 🥳
Are you looking for a postdoc position working on asteroids and comets? Would it help if it's in a beautiful place in southern France? If yes, then consider applying to the following position of my colleague Benoit Carry at the Observatory in Nice:

We're so excited to share the results of the ALMA large program ARKS that studied the distribution of dust and gas in a sample of 24 exoKuiper belts. With @lucaroundtheworld.bsky.social, Meredith Hughes and a large collaboration, we just published 10 papers presenting our first results arkslp.org
The new launch will also allow for a larger mass of @cometinterceptor.bsky.social, which will be used for more fuel, hence a larger delta-v (now up to 1 km/s compared to 600 m/s).
This will likely make more targets accessible to the mission.
Big #planetSci news: @cometinterceptor.bsky.social is no longer planned to launch alongside the Ariel mission.

Hahaha, I like that idea 😅
Don't know the details, but they lost contact at the beginning of Dec. last year. The spacecraft passed behind Mars and didn't re-estabilish communication with Earth when it came back around. It seems that it's no longer on its nominal orbit.
Can highly recommend submitting a proposal in response to this call by @issibern.ch! Successful proposals allow you to meet twice for one week in Bern with a small group of researchers of your choosing to discuss and work on your favorite science topic.
I also encourage ECR to apply!

After reviewing nearly 200 applications from prospective grad students and postdocs over the past few months for a couple different 🧪⚒️ postings, here are some tips, at least as they apply to North American positions. I hope they help future applicants. Share with your networks. 🧵
The calendar changes— on the one hand, an entirely arbitrary chronological signifier. On the other, an absolutely necessary chance to catch our breath, renew our energies, and look ahead. Let’s go!
