Pro tip: If you want a 24-hour writing contest to feel even shorter, try doing it from a conference hotel while traveling for work.

My entry for the Writers Weekly contest is officially in! Hoping to reclaim my spot on the board this time around.

Thank you so much for this! You're absolutely right about the isolation and the repetition. I’m going to officially treat this as a legitimate investment in the craft, not an indulgence.

Anyone else feel guilty spending money on their writing setup?

My current tech is dying. Upgrading will remove the friction, but I keep trying to convince myself I can squeeze another year out of them.

Please tell me it's okay to invest in my tools!

ISO lost story from an early 80s elementary reader.

Plot: God comes to earth as a homeless kid.
Best line: Passing a florist and seeing the prices, God says, “I thought I made enough for everybody.”
Ending: The boy dies.

Incredible flash-style story hidden in a curriculum. Anyone recognize it?

The Honorable Mention streak is officially broken with the latest 24-hour flash fiction contest.

The funny part? I thought it was my worst entry yet, but my wife thought it was my best.

I see this as proof that the judges and I are aligned, and my wife is just very kind.

Recovering lawyer question: What is the statute of limitations on holding a beta-read manuscript for a friend you no longer speak to?

It’s been 10+ years. Is this abandoned property?

My shredder is ready, but my conscience is filing an objection.

Had to watch live. Goosebumps when the torch enters the stadium. Every single time.

There is a very small, very lucky club of us who know exactly what that handle feels like in your grip.

Most days I’m chasing a good plot. But 24 years ago, I was chasing the Olympic flame.

Good luck to everyone competing in the Winter Games starting today! It's an incredible honor to have been associated in some small way with the majesty of the Olympics.

The face blindness is the least of his worries. The doctor looked at a patient describing severe clinical depression and told him his chemical imbalance could be fixed by watching someone make a balloon animal. I’d be calling the medical board for immediate license revocation.

My work here is done. 😂

Looks delicious! I must confess that I also spent an inordinate amount of time zooming in and pretending I was looking at an aerial image of the African savannah, but that’s in no way a criticism of your cooking (more a harrowing glimpse into my own bizarre mind).

Submission uploaded!

A special kind of anxiety comes with writing a contest entry during a massive snowstorm. I was convinced the power would cut out at 23 hours and 59 minutes. I survived (and the WiFi held).

Now, to wait for the results...and the snow plows.

The WritersWeekly 24-hour short story contest kicks off in minutes. I'm sitting on back-to-back Honorable Mentions, so I'm hungry for a win.

The plot twist? Trying to write a winner while navigating kids' sports and imminent "Snowmageddon." Let the chaos begin!

As a writer, I’m willing to suspend my disbelief for the sake of a good story.

But a phishing email claiming my estranged former friend wants me at her "special party"? That’s asking too much. Even my most creative fiction has to be somewhat grounded in reality.

I tend to just throw in an ALL CAPS note in the text reminding me to fix the problem in post. Sometimes, if I’m feeling generous to my future self, I even add details as to how.

Didn't win Story of the Year, but still feel like a winner for making the finals.

Congrats to Paul D'Arcy for claiming the top spot! Now, back to writing.

Another vote for “Darmok” here. Extra points for anything in modern culture that references “Gilgamesh.”

I’ve lost track of the number of WIPs I’ve got going on, and each time I try to tackle one, some new idea or flash fiction gets in the way…

Meanwhile, my notebook of ideas sits on my shelf and screams at me.

No editor or critic is tougher than a kid who’s outgrowing the magic. I’m putting more effort into this Santa response letter than anything else I’ve written this year, purely for the slim chance of seeing that "maybe he is real" look one last time. #ChristmasMagic #GrowingUp

I said just about the same thing two days ago - Home Alone and Die Hard are the same movie, just on different scales.

As we all settle in to watch holiday movies this time of year, remember - if you consider Home Alone a Christmas movie, you have to do the same for Die Hard. They’re essentially the same movie on different scales.

The hardest part of writing isn’t the plot holes or the dialogue - it’s trying to switch my brain from "Corporate Professional Mode" to "Creative Storyteller Mode" after a long day. If work would just chill, my word count would soar. #WritingCommunity #AmWriting

That specific ache when a story you love gets turned down never fully goes away. But neither does the drive to tell the next one. Putting in the work today, trusting that the acceptance letter is out there waiting for the right draft. #WritingCommunity #WriterProblems
