In the summer of 2012, I spent all day, every day watching the Olympic Torch Relay and then the Games themselves on the internet. You might infer that I didn’t have a job (retired? unemployed?). Incorrect. I had a full-time job as a healthcare worker in a hospital. (Don’t worry – I wasn’t a neurosurgeon.) I was paid my normal salary and benefits for the entire four months in exchange for minimal productivity on my part. While employers call this ‘time theft,’ I think of it as ‘developing my global citizenship.’ As I watched that Torch move around the British Isles, I found myself simultaneously head-hanging humbled and chest-swelling proud. Since then, I’ve found a way to follow every Relay and its subsequent Games, marveling at the logistics that must be involved in coordinating and executing such a large-scale endeavor. Say what you will about the costs and the controversies of the Olympics as a behemoth undertaking. I will continue to focus on the achievement of each individual involved in making it happen. The volunteers, the executives, the athletes, the coaches, the torch bearers, the uniform creators – thousands of humans doing their very best for the mere sake of doing their very best. And to my 2012 employer: Sorry for my lack of focus that summer.
