There aren't a lot of images of the Typhoon Sinlaku damage coming out of Saipan or Tinian yet because people are still hunkered down, with the second night beginning

A poster hanging on a brick wall that says Leave your leaves for lightning bugs! with lightning bugs on new purple asters . There's too-small-to-read text in a box with the heading Lightning bugs are struggling to survive, help them thrive by taking these actions
As we enter fall, it's so important that we tell everyone to leave those leaves! Mads Torres designed a poster to help us.
Lightning bugs are one of the most charismatic insects we've got. Actions we take to protect them protects many insects!
Get some to hang in your neighborhood!

Opossum on the roof!!
Being surrounded by some of the most wonderful, charismatic endangered species on the planet doesn't take away the absolute joy of catching a glimpse of one of my favorite local pals living their best life.
ICYMI: After years of hearing complaints that it's hard to get good career advice in marine biology, I assembled an expert panel to answer your questions about graduate school, where to find jobs, what skills are needed, and much, much more.

If you haven't spent much time in rural areas- especially rural AK- you probably think of your local public media as just one of many options. But in rural areas, they're *the* option.
If you're thinking about donating, consider sending it to KOTZ or another small station- it'll go a lot further.
This still makes me mad - having to carry the kids all the way there just to have the state say "sorry folks, Disney world is closed. Nazis outside should have told ya."
Also it's in Tampa, which should be great for me because I went to college there, but the ICE concentration camp in the Everglades and the aggressively anti-trans legislation makes me pretty hesitant to spend my money there. We will not be tacking on beach days.
The rescission bill has passed the Senate. Once it passes the House, as expected, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's budget will be zeroed out for the first time since 1967, back when TV stations still broadcast in black and white.
Which women expected to perform parenthood duties while balancing their career responsibilities is a whole other thing in and of itself, but if these conferences want to be equity-focused (oooh, can I still say that?) they can start by lowering barriers to attendance.
Bernie Sanders meme - old white man with stern expression with white text over the picture that says "I am once again asking for childcare at AZA"
We will likely have to take our kids to a major annual conference because both my husband and I are on committees and have other duties, so are expected to be there. But the conference, despite being in a field dominated by women, does not offer childcare.

Biggest difference between my original Oblivion experience and the remaster is how vivid the flora looks!
Realizing I had Columbine, (wild) strawberry, and bergamot (bee balm) in my own pollinator garden blooming right now really shows how much I've grown myself in the last 20 years.
Thanks! I had a few other playlists tagged on there, but since you were looking specifically at a wide representation I appreciate oyu sharing what you've found :) thanks again!
Would you mind sharing a link (if possible) to the playlists? I'm looking to expand my pro-union playlist into an anti-fascist one and want to know about any gems I could be missing. It typically only got played on Labor Day and the 4th of July but I see it needing to be in heavier rotation now.
Like, I know how to write research papers! And yet, this is a project I inherited when the PI who developed the research questions dropped out. There's a million things I'd change if we could do it again AND I'm working with a field I'm not familiar with, what if I'm doing a bad job?
Barriers to writing a research paper that's been looming over me for months:
- what if it's been too long/no longer relevant
- what if our methodology was bad
- what if I misrepresent the articles/theory I've cited
- what if I leave out a glaringly obvious reference
- general situation RE fascism
What are the social impacts of large-scale marine protected areas? We reviewed the evidence in this paper.
Better management of the social impacts of marine protected areas can lead to more equitable & effective outcomes.

An insightful story about how snobbish science & fieldwork can be — and how little it can take to be inclusive!

For sure, and very timely. I'm traveling to Luta in a few weeks to continue some relationship building and start working on a new strategic plan for community centered bird conservation on the island. I passed the paper on to my project partners.
I admit I thought it was called that because it's an intro to inferential statistics for students, which is how I've always encountered it!
What an incredible partnership and resource, thank you for sharing. Look forward to reading and learning from in-depth!
AZA doesn't seem to be on here yet (so can't tag) but curious what, if any discussions are happening about how they plan to protect AZA members and guests that belong to marginalized communities at annual conferences in hostile states.
Wowowow WHAT A BAR TO SET 👏🏽 not every time that a scientific paper is done as close to right as it gets (imo) when involving Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific! 💙 www.tinyurl.com/pacifaran
How can #birding be more accessible to people with #disability? See our research on constraints and facilitators!
I don't know why I said 'decision-make' and not 'make decisions', clearly I need caffeine in addition to the book
Just pre-ordered. Moving into evaluating applied conservation and wanting the work with my org to be intentional about how we build relationships, maintain those relationships authentically, and decision-make with Indigenous partners and their communities - I'm really looking forward to reading!
Like, can you imagine nearly a year of your whole childhood lost to a disease that could be (and would be) essentially eradicated? Can you imagine how many lives would be so much better if we kept this momentum for other diseases? Shortsighted, small-minded evil to take that miracle away.
My Great Uncle Jimmy spent 9 months as a child in an iron lung. Horrifying outcomes await us with decisions like these.
Just 33 years ago we were erecting statues to celebrate Jonas Salk’s work to eradicate polio with a vaccine. 🥺
