The SAVE Act stalled in the Senate. It’s a major victory in the fight for the freedom to vote. Thank you to everyone who spoke out against what threatened to become the most restrictive voting bill ever passed by Congress.

Today, digital services are the front door of government. For many people, they are the primary way to access public programs. With implementation now delayed and further changes under consideration, access to government services for disabled people is being pushed farther out of reach.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a cornerstone of #disability rights in the United States. More than 50 years after its passage, it remains a vital protection against discrimination, yet it is also the subject of renewed public attention and legal debate. #Section504
Voting is a fundamental civil right. The Senate is still debating legislation that could change federal voter registration requirements. Policies that make registration harder could create new barriers for voters with disabilities. Take action:

Trump’s executive order on mail voting would give the USPS, an independent agency, power over who can vote by mail. The Brennan Center and other groups are challenging the order in court. bit.ly/4mhDqln
There’s a lot of discussion right now about the President’s FY2027 Budget. It’s important to understand what it is and what it is not. (1/5) #Disability #Disabilities
Congress may move a budget reconciliation package soon—and Medicaid is often central to these discussions. It funds long-term services and supports, including HCBS, that support independence and community living. Details are still emerging.
This is worth watching.

Disabled people experiencing houselessness deserve homes, not handcuffs. If we truly want safer, stronger communities, we must reject policies that push people out of sight and instead commit to solutions that bring everyone in from the cold.

Vote-by-mail is often discussed as a process issue, but for many #disabled voters it is fundamentally about access.
Access to voting is a civil right, and it must include everyone. On March 31, an Executive Order was issued with provisions related to vote-by-mail. For many disabled voters, vote-by-mail is a key way to participate in elections.
The SAVE Act goes beyond voter ID. It would require a passport or birth certificate to register to vote, which would block millions of American citizens from voting.
Work requirements strip healthcare away from the very people Medicaid exists to protect.
State policymakers can help keep Medicaid accessible by eliminating redundant renewal paperwork and other administrative barriers.
Voting policy determines who can actually participate — and making voting harder doesn’t protect democracy; access does.

Disability is often overlooked in global policy—yet it shapes workforce participation, diplomatic engagement, and human rights outcomes.
When it’s not intentionally included, it’s effectively excluded.
A meaningful step toward more consistent and accountable inclusion.

The SAVE America Act is voter suppression. It targets working people who don’t have the time or money to chase down a passport or other documents.
Congress should be protecting our right to vote, not trashing it. Tell them: stop the SAVE America Act! https://bit.ly/4dwS8Cv
Across disability policy, a pattern is emerging:
Supports that make community living possible, like Home & Community-Based Services & civil rights protections, are being challenged
These aren’t separate issues
They shape whether disabled people can live in their communities
This moment matters.

The right to live in the community (not institutions) has been hard fought.
A lawsuit now tests how those rights are enforced.
This isn’t about repealing Section 504. It’s about whether those rights can be weakened in practice. #Disability

An important part of this discussion is what voting access looks like in practice.
For many people with disabilities, systems are already difficult to navigate. Changes to registration requirements can have real impacts on participation.

“If the SAVE Act were to pass, it would be the worst voter suppression law that Congress has ever enacted.”
The SAVE Act would be the most restrictive federal voting bill to ever be passed by Congress. @mawaldman.bsky.social talks with @padilla.senate.gov about what voters should know:
Learning disabilities like dyslexia affect how people process information — not intelligence or leadership ability.
We appreciate the National Center for Learning Disabilities speaking out about stigma and misinformation.

Fraud prevention matters, but responses must be proportionate and grounded in evidence.
When oversight tools are misguided, the risk is not just administrative disruption, it can directly affect disabled people’s ability to remain in their homes & communities.

Disabled people aren't only recipients of care, many are also caregivers supporting aging parents, partners, children & other family members while navigating disability-related barriers of their own. That's one reason caregiving is an economic security issue for many disabled people & their families
Caregiving is not a side issue. It is central to how #disabled people live, work, and remain in their communities. People with disabilities are both recipients of care and caregivers themselves – supporting family members, aging parents, partners, and children while navigating barriers of their own.
