Agreed. I also think “intelligent design” hilariously misunderstands design, and also intelligence. But the incuriosity is of course the point of the hierarchical system of control that birthed it

I love this kind of mimicry in evolution because it’s actually just a shitload of accidents that predators increasingly reacted to like “seems snakey” and then “too snakey” and then “shit is that a snake”

It actually is very much like learning how to draw a snake except not on purpose

Author’s Note on Techno-optimism

I came up with the premise for this world before I knew what techno-optimism was, before I would have known to have opinions about it. I wanted to imagine how drones, which were primarily tools of war back then, could be used for something good. I largely bought into the idea that humanity could innovate our way out of the climate crisis with new advancements in technology — the core assumption of techno-optimism. Through my research as I built this world further, I came to understand that we already have all the technology we need to manage climate change justly, for everyone, while preserving the biodiversity that remains. The innovations of this book that can actually get us there, right now, are not the eponymous drones, but universal housing, indigenous land management, and food forests — simple, proven concepts that have been with us for thousands of years.

This is the note on techno-optimism that's included in the book. It's a good conversation to have, I've been on a whole journey with it. Writing this book was an enormous part of that journey.

Thank you so much for this @mynachang.bsky.social ! I had a lot of fun answering these questions and I hope you have fun reading them. Also to be clear the book is very *in conversation with* techno-optimism, which I personally find profoundly problematic at this time

I feel like it was more common in the mid-late 20th century, or maybe it's regional, I almost never hear it in the Bay Area but it is familiar

It's a little heartbreaking that Locus is down to the wire here. Locus is so important to the SFF community. If you can chip in, please do. @locusmag.bsky.social

It’s actually *so many* bones, I don’t know how you got it done that fast

Go chip in if you can. No other magazine covers the SF/fantasy field as thoroughly or knowledgeably as Locus does.

DarkSky reads For many, night and darkness are associated with fear, or at least with insecurity. We worry about what might be lurking in the shadows or what lies just beyond the edge of sight.

Today is the start of #InternationalDarkSkyWeek! 🌃 inspired by @darkskyintl.bsky.social's "Go dark with a good book," we'll be highlighting several of our new and upcoming titles that celebrate the dark nights which continue to inspire speculative fiction authors' bright imagination. 🪐🌌
