Abstract: This study examines the relationship between misinformation and political intolerance during the 2022 Brazilian Election. Using a three-wave survey, we show that citizens who believe false claims about electoral fraud become more intolerant toward political opponents over time. Beliefs in electoral misinformation consistently predicted increases in intolerance over the course of the election. We find an indirect effect for using messaging apps for news and intolerance, mediated by beliefs in electoral misinformation, suggesting that citizens who rely on messaging apps for news are not only more susceptible to believing misinformation but also to its detrimental effects on democracy. These findings highlight electoral misinformation as a key driver of intolerant attitudes in polarized democracies, operating not only by eroding trust in institutions but also by undermining citizens’ commitment to democratic norms.
🚨New publication alert! @patyrossini.bsky.social led a new article with @antoniskalog.bsky.social and me investigating the effects of electoral misinformation on political intolerance in the 2022 Brazilian elections.

Mark Zuckerberg's commitment to free speech is as deep as Exxon's commitment to clean energy
Meta's policy commitments never last longer than an election cycle
Mark Zuckerberg's commitment to free speech and civic engagement runs precisely as deep as Exxon's commitment to clean energy.
He doesn't have a single intellectual commitment that could remain standing against a mild political headwind.

Which, unlike the end of the factchecking program, are not restricted to the US. Instead, prior community guidelines on discriminatory, hateful, and dehumanizing speech will be loosened globally (except in countries where local regulation outlaw this kind of speech).

It’s important to consider the consequences of online abuse on political representation in light of the changes in meta’s moderation approach allowing more abuse and harassment to stay online.

Meta’s fact-checking snub in US sets off alarm bells for fact-checkers in India
A number of fact-checkers that popped up in India in the last few years are heavily reliant on funding from Meta
Meta's decision to ditch fact-checkers in the US reeks of dangerous opportunism, prioritizing 'community-driven' spin over accountability. With Indian fact-checkers heavily reliant on Meta funding, this could spell disaster for truth & transparency globally.

As per the report below (in Portuguese), Meta’s decision to end factchecking is only happening in the US—at least for now—if you needed any reminders that this is nothing more than a business decision to fit with the political agenda of the day.
