Κάποιος κακεντρεχής είχε πει ότι τα βγάζει από την έδρα του.

Τα κρητικά ιερογλυφικά και η γραμμική Α’ σχεδόν σίγουρα δεν ήταν ελληνικά, απλά τα μηκυναικά ελληνικά γράφτηκαν με ίδιους χαρακτήρες (Γραμμική Β’). Είναι σαν να προσπαθούμε να διαβάσουμε βιετναμέζικο κείμενο με γνώσεις λατινικών, επειδή έχουν όμοιο αλφάβητο. Δεν πιστεύω να αποκρυπτογραφηθεί ποτέ.

Για τον συμβολαιογράφο, δεν έχω ιδέα το προσπαθεί να πει: αυτό που ξέρω εγώ είναι πως πρόκειται για λέξη που πλάστηκε με αρχαία στοιχεία (οι αρχαίοι δεν είχαν συμβολαιογράφους) για να αντικαταστήσει το ξενικό «νοταριος».

Το «θερμομετρο» είναι είναι ειδική περίπτωση δανείου: δημιουργήθηκε στα γαλλικά με ελληνικά στοιχεία, οπότε το καταλαβαίνουμε πιο εύκολα απ’ό,τι και οι ίδιοι οι Γάλλοι, αλλά δεν είναι ελληνική λέξη. Αντίστοιχα, το μπαργούμαν είναι λέξη που δημιουργήθηκε από αγγλικά στοιχεία, αλλά δεν είναι αγγλική.

Αλλά το να μιλάμε για αδιάκοπη ιστορική συνέχεια με μια γλώσσα που δεν την ξέρουμε, και που το μόνο σίγουρο είναι πως δεν θα την καταλάβαινε κανένας από τους μεταγενέστερους, είναι στρέβλωση της μεθοδολογίας για να βγάλει με το ζόρι το αποτέλεσμα που θέλουμε.

Θα μπορούσε κάποιος να το τραβήξει από τα μαλλιά και να πει ότι οι διάφορες αρχαιοελληνικές διάλεκτοι απέκλιναν από κάποιον κοινό πρόγονο που ομιλούνταν ήδη το 2000 πΧ (ισχύει· κάτι θα μιλούσαν και οι προ-παππούδες των Μυκηναίων) και καποιοι τοποθετούν αυτά τα «πρωτο-ελληνικά» ακόμη και στο 3000 πΧ.

Είναι εντυπωσιακό πώς κατάφερε να χωρέσει όλη τη γλωσσική μυθολογία σε μια συνέντευξη. Πάντως για τα ελληνικά, τα παλαιότερα γραπτά τεκμήρια που έχουμε τοποθετούν (συμβατικά) την αρχή της γλώσσας γύρω στο 1500 πΧ. Μιλάμε βέβαια για μυκηναϊκά ελληνικά, που δεν θα τα καταλάβαιναν ούτε οι αρχαίοι.

One of the principles of our AI Lang project at the European Centre for Modern Languages is precisely this: the critical use of AI in language education.

The goal isn’t to outsmart machines. It is to understand knowledge better by questioning them.

The most productive moments with AI aren’t when it’s right. They’re when it’s almost right.

Those near-misses make us pause, think, and refine what we know.

Epistemic vigilance is more than critical thinking. It’s about how we decide what to trust. In language education, it’s becoming essential as teachers and learners use AI to generate content, analyse texts, or model writing.

More optimisticly, it is also the starting point of deeper learning.

I am sure I am not the only one who has ever asked AI something and felt impressed —until I realised it can't be right!

That pause (the "wait, what? moment) is the start of epistemic vigilance.
