White-bellied Sea-Eagle. These massive birds have a wingspan of up to 7 feet and are found from India to Australia. I captured these from a small boat in Kakadu National Park in Australia.

A saddleback, photographed in the wild on New Zealand’s North Island. These birds, once nearly extinct, are now thriving again thanks to conservation efforts and predator-free sanctuaries like Zealandia.

The milky way sets behind aspens and a lone pine.

I captured this from the driveway last night testing out some new equipment. Before the end of the summer l am hoping to capture some more timelapse footage for my project.

Metallic starlings, also called shining starlings, photographed in the wild at Daintree National Park, Queensland, Australia.

I spent a slow and quiet walk through the rainforest waiting for them to settle into my presence.

I struggle to use it. It has been something I have to set an alarm for, and I’m terrible at the consistency of posting daily. Maybe there is a balance on both ends of the spectrum.

A still photo from the short timelapse I shared over the weekend. The core of our Milky Way galaxy setting in the summer behind aspens and a veil of clouds.

This was captured in a Bortle 2 sky site.

The flickering isn't my equipment, its lightning shooting off every minute or so just to the south of town.

Here is a short astrophotography timelapse of the Milky Way setting behind some aspen trees in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Last night I was able to get out and capture this just as the incoming storm clouds made their way across northern Arizona.

A river of stars flows above the slopes of the San Francisco Peaks. This is one of several images on display at Lowell Observatory if you happen to make a visit.

Now is a great time to look to the east just after sunset and see the Belt of Venus. The dark layer is the Earth’s shadow stretching into space. The pink band is called the Belt of Venus which is sunlight scattered in the atmosphere above the shadow.

I haven’t been up north in far too long. Hopefully next summer we can make a trip to see the northern lights and catch some wildlife along the way. Maybe make a road trip out of it.

Summertime astro adventures in Northern Arizona

Once the moon starts rising later this week you’ll be able to see the Milky Way high in the sky after sunset.

Have you got out this summer and gone stargazing?

Oh wow! Yeah every chance I get before the weather comes or it gets too warm. I hope you can find them!

I’ve definitely seen some headed that direction. It’s been usually warm out here in the Southwest. I wonder if that is a factor.

Three Sandhills cranes flying during their yearly migration. Every year these birds travel thousands of miles between northern breeding grounds as far as Alaska and southern wintering sites in Mexico. Their journey features large stopover flocks sometimes in the thousands.

The comb-crested jacana, also known as the lotusbird or lilytrotter, is the sole species in the genus Irediparra. This striking bird is easily identified by its black crown and hindneck, contrasted with a bright red fleshy wattle on its forehead and forecrown. During breeding season, its comb turns vibrant pink, fading to orange afterward.

Found across southeastern Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Timor-Leste, and northern and eastern Australia, it inhabits large freshwater wetlands, swamps, and lakes. It relies on floating vegetation, such as water lilies and hyacinths, to support its weight as it moves across the water’s surface. Though rare and localized, it is not considered globally threatened.

Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) are large, migratory waterfowl with black heads, white chinstraps, and brown bodies. They migrate in V-shaped formations, honking loudly. In Arizona, they pass through in fall and spring with some overwintering in lakes and wetlands. Known for their adaptability, they can also be territorial, especially during nesting season.

Vernazza, located in Cinque Terre, Italy, is known for its colorful cliffside houses, historic charm, and stunning coastal views. Located along the Ligurian coast, this small fishing village features a natural harbor, piazzas, and the medieval Doria Castle, which once protected it from pirates. You can explore its narrow, winding streets and hike the scenic trails connecting it to the other Cinque Terre villages.
