Worried about gerrymandering? The solution is proportional representation by Fair Vote Canada | Apr 20, 2026

Gerrymandering allegations in Alberta show our current system is vulnerable to interference.

Moving to proportional representation ensures parties cannot gain an unfair advantage by redrawing lines.

First-past-the-post turns cabinet decisions into a rubber stamp for politicians who win majorities with just 40% of the vote.

Proportional representation ensures how public dollars are spent requires genuine transparency and consensus.

The subtitle notes that Lewis is calling for fundamental structural changes during his first Ottawa visit. The bottom half of the image features a pull quote where Lewis argues that the first-past-the-post system causes people to vote defensively or strategically. He concludes by stating that proportional representation is needed to restore faith in democracy and allow people to vote for what they believe in.

Appreciate @avilewis.ca bringing the case for proportional representation back to Ottawa.

Breaking the cycle of defensive voting is the only way to modernize our democracy. It is time to make every vote count.

First-past-the-post lets politicians with 40% of the vote use public money for vanity projects and donors with little scrutiny.

Proportional representation ensures genuine consensus and accountability for how taxpayer dollars are spent.

Proportional representation ends safe seats and regional dominance.

It means electing Liberals from rural Alberta, Conservatives from downtown Toronto, and everywhere in between.

These more representative governments would go a long way toward easing regional tensions.

Under first-past-the-post, independent riding boundaries are just an honour system based on whether the ruling party decides to play fair.

Proportional representation replaces this with multi-party accountability, ensuring broad support matters more than partisan map-making.

First-past-the-post means guardrails like freedom of information & independent riding redrawing are just an honour system, relying on 40% majorities not to scrap them when inconvenient.

Proportional representation adds a vital check by requiring broad consensus for any changes.

Ford’s "false majority," won with just 40% of the vote, lets him use omnibus bills to skip hearings and hide cellphone records amid billion dollar scandals.

Proportional representation stops one party rule from gutting transparency laws when they become inconvenient.

Grateful to @avilewis.ca for continually raising the importance of proportional representation.

Moving away from first-past-the-post is essential to ending voter cynicism.

It is time for a system that empowers the many rather than concentrating power in the hands of the few.

Big thanks to @robbotterell.bsky.social and @bcgreens.bsky.social for championing electoral reform in BC.

Their recent exchange in the house shows that the push for a Citizens' Assembly is gaining ground.

It is time to retire first-past-the-post and build a democracy where every vote matters.

Marilyn Gladu admits her requests for Sarnia went nowhere until she crossed the floor.

Despite 29,000 Liberal voters there, their needs were sidelined.

Proportional representation ensures all votes count toward seats, so no area is ignored just because another party won.

A digital screenshot of an article from the Calgary Herald titled Opinion: Avi Lewis has at least one idea Albertans should consider. The piece is written by Marshall Palmer and was published on April 14, 2026.

Below the headline is a wide-angle photograph of the interior of the House of Commons in Ottawa, showing the green benches of the governing and opposition sides facing the central aisle and the Speaker's chair in the distance.

The visible text of the article suggests that Albertans who feel unrepresented in Ottawa should take a second look at the federal NDP's platform on electoral reform. It argues that a more proportional system would ensure Alberta’s votes translate into real influence, reduce regional alienation, and improve the quality of democracy regardless of which party is in power.

Despite a Liberal majority, first-past-the-post leaves hundreds of thousands of Liberal Albertans without a voice.

Proportional representation would guarantee Alberta a fair seat at the table and consistent representation in government, regardless of which party holds power.

For the first time since 2015, we have a majority without a majority of the vote.

Instead of focusing on safe seats, swing seats, or floor-crossings, let's fix the system with proportional representation.

It is time for a democracy that reflects every vote through cooperation.

Marissen's post reads: "Strange that this story doesn't deal with one very big elephant in the room: the fact that Kevin Falcon -- Caroline Elliott's brother-in-law -- insists on remaining as leader of BC United, keeping the party on life support so he can prevent the BC Liberal name from being used by the thousands of Liberals who want to have a provincial Liberal Party in British Columbia. Right at a time when the Liberal brand is very strong across the country, including in British Columbia. Preventing a Liberal Party from re-emerging appears to be a key strategy for BC Conservatives at this time."

The quoted CTV News Vancouver headline reads: "BC United executives eye Conservative race, as donations still flow for dormant party."

In a proportional system, BC United and the Conservatives could run separately.

Because first-past-the-post forces a two-party choice, BC United collapsed and is now squatting on the Liberal brand to ensure no alternative can emerge to threaten the BC Conservative flank.

One must ask if Canada’s political future is inextricably linked to a two-party system dictated by binary choices in a handful of swing seats.

Proportional representation would break that system, enabling broad multi-party collaboration and consensus.

Doug Ford used a 40% vote share to win a majority, exempt himself from Freedom of Information rules, and preside over major spending scandals while healthcare, education, and housing declined.

If he says that system works, that’s exactly why we need proportional representation.

First-past-the-post means it’s not enough to win votes, you need them in the right seats.

That’s why new parties struggle.

Proportional representation fixes this. Seats match votes, so new movements can win seats.

Floor-crossing itself isn't the problem; it's the lopsided incentive in first-past-the-post.

When a party is a few seats from a majority, poaching an MP becomes a shortcut to a majority.

PR diminishes that incentive, ensuring power is earned through broad consensus.

Proportional representation makes gerrymandering harder because seats are won through broad support rather than swing ridings, making boundary shifts less effective.

Since map changes require multi-party consensus, no single party can rig the lines to their own advantage.

Freedom of Information laws are vital for accountability.

Yet, first-past-the-post lets politicians without a broad mandate gut them when they become inconvenient.

Proportional representation protects these rules by ensuring they can't be changed without broad consensus.

Under first-past-the-post, BC United and Conservatives were forced into a zero-sum fight for the same seats.

That lead to dirty tricks and backroom deals that ultimately the total demise of BCU.

Proportional representation would have allowed both to run openly and cooperate on shared values.

Two-party politics prioritizes flipping MPs to secure a majority over finding common ground.

Proportional representation allows multi-party cooperation: members can join parties they truly align with instead of jumping between the same two, then work together to build consensus.

Duverger's Law states winner-take-all systems create a two-party duopoly, where a few swing seats decide outcomes while other areas are ignored.

Proportional representation breaks this duopoly and promotes multiple voices, ensuring real choice and forcing genuine competition.
