Our photograph looks up from the forest floor toward the towering trunks of tall evergreen trees deep in the forests of Ireland and l will tell a tale for you in a moment. The bark of the nearest tree is rough and deeply textured tanned brown, leading the eye upward where branches fan out like skeletal fingers. The canopy above is dense, but dappled sunlight filters through, casting a warm orange glow against the cool shadows. The scene feels both peaceful and slightly oppressive, the kind of quiet that hums with hidden life. The picture is in a late Summers colour palette and finished with a white border frame. Now our tale.. Imagine yourself in this situation… You wake to the sound of your own breathing, too loud, too fast. The ground beneath you is cold and uneven, carpeted with needles that prick your palms as you push yourself upright. Above you, the trees loom impossibly high, their tops lost in a canopy that sways without wind. You don’t remember how you got here. There’s no trail, no sign of people, only the whisper of branches rubbing together far above. When you stand, your legs tremble, and something damp slides down the side of your neck. You reach up…it’s not blood. It’s sap, thick and sticky, like the trees are bleeding too. A faint sound echoes between the trunks. It’s not footsteps exactly more like dragging. You turn in circles, trying to find its source, but every direction looks the same; endless brown bark and dark green shadows. Then you see it. A faint mark carved into the tree beside you..a symbol, almost like an eye with roots for lashes. More appear as you look around. Every tree in sight bears the same mark, and beneath each one, the ground seems disturbed, as if something was recently buried there. You step back, heart pounding. Somewhere above, a branch creaks and something breathes out your name. And the forest listens. What do you? Sleep well…
